Life Versus Dark Energy: How An Advanced Civilization Could Resist the Accelerating Expansion of the Universe

People with no vision don’t look past today. Planning for 100 billion years from now? THAT is spectacular. Dreams about civilizations so powerful they gather not just stars but whole galaxies to resist the end of all things… those are dreams worth dreaming.

James Gunn Fired From ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Franchise Over Offensive Tweets

He made a bunch of bad jokes on Twitter years ago, and they jumped back up to bite him. A reasonable person can look at this any of a number of ways:

One Hand: They were jokes made a *long* time ago. And it was obvious that they were jokes. Are we still in the phase of “let’s destroy people without any real reflection over trivial nonsense?”

Other Hand: These jokes weren’t just bad. They weren’t just offensive. They were jokes making light of pedophelia. And, ok, maybe he just liked being edgy. But he sure made a *lot* of these jokes. Enough to make you go “hmmm…”

So, you can feel free to take either side. However, be aware that Gunn himself has justified his own firing:

I wish some of these so-called defenders of liberty would start to understand what freedom of speech is AND isn’t. Roseanne is allowed to say whatever she wants. It doesn’t mean @ABCNetwork needs to continue funding her TV show if her words are considered abhorrent.

Please, PLEASE… someone convince the DNC  to use the same talent that made sure Hillary their nominee last time to make sure Maxine Waters is their nominee in 2020. The election season will be EPIC.

Maxine Waters supporters burn American flag outside California rep’s office

The photographs with the article (and in THIS article) are iconic.

What happened: the “Oath Keepers” had said that they were going to go to Rep. Waters’ office to protest *her.* Around 100 “counter protestors” showed up in advance and the Oath Keepers, apparently in communication with the police tasked with keeping the peace, decided to *not* show up. But the counter protestors couldn’t let an opportunity to express their hate go to waste, so they (apparently) stole an American flag from a nearby pickup truck, doused it with lighter fluid that they just happened to have on hand (and who among us can say they don’t walk around with canisters of volatile flammable fluids when they are planning on attending political functions?), set it on fire, stomped on it, chanted anti-American slogans and basically filmed Donald Trumps next campaign ad for him.

Now, I don’t know if the Oath Keepers bailed at the request of the cops, or if they bailed because they couldn’t gin up enough internal support, or what. But I’d *like* to think that at least a few of their leaders have finally figured out how politicking is done in this new era: trolling. Whether they planned this in advance or not, they and other non-leftist organizations should learn from it and use the lesson. In the future, announce you’re going to go protest XYZ. And then… sometimes show up, sometimes not. Perhaps keep an eye on the place and if it looks like you are massively outnumbered, don’t show up. Let the other side have the day.  And let them make fools of themselves in front of a thousand cameras. If you not showing up is enough to make the other side decide to burn the American flag… your job is DONE.

Back in June I made a post bemoaning the state of heroes and myth in modern culture. Oddly, just a few days later a guy who seems to be a scholar of some type on the subject posted a video discussing almost the same thing, but in somewhat less gibberish language. I think it’s worth a look. His basic point: in myth there are two types of heroes: the “aspirational” hero, those who are just naturally pure good and right (i.e Superman); and there are the “cathartic motivational” hero who needs to be taught to be good and right (the example he uses is Spiderman, who, when he first develops superpowers, uses them not to rescue people but to make money). And in recent years, “aspirational” heroes such as Superman and Luke Skywalker have been “deconstructed,” turning them into.. well, scumbags often enough.

While on a certain level it can turn a somewhat bland character more interesting if you make them flawed (let’s face it, Batman is *seriously* mentally disturbed, and he’s way more interesting than Superman or Captain America), doing this on a wide scale has the possibility of doing damage to the wider culture. Because what do people strive for? It has been a constant throughout history that people have had legendary heroes that have been held up to be the standard of proper behavior (in the US, our legendary heroes have often been historical figures such as Washinton, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, Abe Lincoln, etc.). Often thee heroes are far beyond *your* piddly abilities… you can’t fly or stop bullets like Superman no matter how hard you try, or wield the Force like Luke Skywalker. But you *could,* theoretically, strive to be as “good” as them, to try to uphold Truth, Justice and the American Way as much as they do. You won’t succeed, but that’s ok. You can’t stack up against the heroes of legend. But you can try your best.

But… if you cut the legs out from underneath your heroes, you lower that standard. Superman is now an SJW scumbag? Captain America now hates conservatives and Republicans? The Founding Fathers are now just a bunch of greedy slaveowners? CMH-awarded war heroes are all a bunch of saps doing the bidding of war profiteers? Luke Skywalker is a whiny emo, uninterested anymore in right and wrong? What you’re doing is lowering the standard for “unachievable” down to the level of the actually achievable. And the fact is, people will adjust their own goals downwards.

Obviously, efforts in the last generation or so to deconstruct sci-fi and comic book heroes and wave their flaws like a flag are not solely responsible for the ills of society But they are a part of it.

IT’S OK TO BE SUPERMAN.

“Star Wars: Clone Wars” was an uneven series. But at its best, it was really good. It was a fully CGI animated half-hour show set between “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith,” focusing mostly on Obi Wan and Anakin, but often going rather far and wide. It saw the return of Darth Maul… yes, the feller what who got lopped in twain. And what was really good about *that* was that Maul wasn’t fine. He didn’t just shake it off and get over it; he was a rather terrifying whackadoodle of a mess. The series was cruising along well… and then Lucasfilm sold out to Disney. Disney decided to take Star Wars in a different direction and summarily cancelled “Clone Wars,” leaving a lot of plots unfinished. Disney did follow up “Clone Wars” with “Rebels,” which started off uneven and then ended up a really rather remarkable show, not least because “Rebels” showed quite clearly that the SJWs who argue that the only reason why anybody didn’t like Admiral Holdo in “The Last Jedi” was because they just don’t like strong women. “Rebels” had a number of female characters ho were so much better than Holdo it’s not even remotely funny. But “Rebels” was not the ending of “Clone Wars” that fans of the show wanted.

Looks like they’re finally going to get it, though.

Modeling of all the parts is done. Some refinement is probable, as some of the bits shown here – the plumbing lines in particular – are pretty small. The plan is to include the walkway to connect the two vessels. In all likelihood the walkway will be a single solid-cast part.

Both vessels are modeled at a higher resolution than is necessary for 1/144. They’re be great at 1/72, perhaps even 1/48. but there are currently no plans for larger-scale (and much more expensive) kits.
