This is hardly surprising, but it’s still sad. Sad to see that the moron we stupidly elected to the highest office in the land surrounds himself with other morons, such as this jackass:

From ABC News:

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters.

The obama administration looks like it’s trying to set off a civil war or a mass exodus of seceding states. With the biggest power-grab and pick-pocketing the American taxpayers have ever seen now law, there is an increasing grumble to bail out of the US. At the small end there’s the “Tea Party” movement; up to the “Sovereignty Movement,” and right up to outright secession (note that in that last link, the writer assumes that secession is only discussed by “extremists;” when what seems more likely is that the writer merely assumes that anyone who dares to discuss the topic is by definition an extremist).

States seceding from the US would, at least in the short term, be an unmitigated disaster. While the last time this happened bloodshed was avoided until the South decided to militarily attack the US Federal Government, if states split from the US today I am not entirely convinced that the US government would be as hesitant to spill blood. And if one state secedes from the Union successfully, the rest of the US will likely fall apart to some degree sooner or later. A Balkanized US is right out of the worst genres of apocolyptic fiction.

On a smaller scale, secession could be a fantastically useful thing. For example: Illinois would benefit no end if it would secede from Chicago. Let Cook County, with it’s ridiculous laws and fantastically corrupt politicians, go their own way. In California there was the “Bay Area Nation” idea, where San Francisco and surroundings would split off to form their own hippie utopia. Such a small nation would obviously be a great advantage… the die-hard socialists and communists would have a place to flock to (thus freeing up space “back home” for people who aren’t friggen’ morons), and the US would have yet another blatant example of why collectivism is a dumbass economic system when the Bay Area Nation fails even more utterly than Cuba has. Plus, the US would have a place to empty its jails into.

But what’s going on today is much more widespread. I heard similar rumblings during the Clinton administration… but those rumblings took years to get up to speed, and I don’t recall them being as loud at their worst *then* as they are *now,* only a month into the obama regime’s reign. As “Atlas Shrugged” daily transitions from a bizarre fantasy novel into a disturbingly accurate look at the government, the chances of obama pushing things too damned far and spurring a Strike just look more and more likely. Setting up a blatant socialist state and grabbing the guns is just asking for trouble.

It was recently brought to my attention that the USS New Hampshire, which was commissioned in October of last year, looks like it was slapped together not only by the lowest bidder, but the lowest bidder who decided to use unskilled labor to do it. Submarines are by their very nature supposed to be silent. In order to be silent, the surface finish must be of the highest quality… not steel plates roughly banged into shape with ball been hammers and them spackled over with caulk. But that’s exactly what the conning tower of the New Hampshire looks like. Am I missing something? Is another layer of insulating material supposed to go over this or something?

You can see it (and order it) here:

http://www.up-ship.com/eAPR/ev2n2.htm

I also have five new space documents for sale here:

Space Doc 60: NASA/Grumman LEM artwork package (scanned & cleaned from a package of transparencies; as you go through the pages, you “peel off” layers from the LEM. If you print these off on transparencies, you can do the same!)
Space Doc 61: Briefing charts for NASA-MOL. Diagrams showing numerous configurations of the MOL space station for NASA.
Space Doc 62: S-IVb-N Briefing: a Douglas concept for a NERVA (nuclear) engine for the second stage of the Saturn Ib
Space Doc 63: Saturn Mission Payload Versatiliy… advanced versions of the Saturn V, including SSTO and solid-boosted concepts
Space Doc 64: Extended Mission Apollo Study – North American briefing on a space lab to replace the LEM adapter. Detailed drawings!

On dispaly a tthe Udvar-Hazy annex of the National Air and Space Museum is a 1/10 scale model of the V-1. That’s not terribly newsworthy… but the model is not of the V-1 London came to know and love, but instead it’s a model of one of the very early test designs, with a vertical rudder placed in front of the pulsejet engine (Why? Don’t friggen’ know.) Also features the different tail, inlet and nose that the early V-1’s had.

One of the first news laws to be proposed under the Obama administration.

Former Black Panther and Illinois congressman Bobby Rush(D) does an end run around the 2nd Amendment

Under HR 45, if you can’t pass a complex test written by the U.S. Attorney General (described in detail below), pay the tax, give up fingerprints and a biometric-capable photo of yourself (that can be turned into a digital facial-recognition number and used as a de facto national ID), every gun you own will become contraband and subject to confiscation, while you stand trial before imprisonment.

Here’s the Irony (that’s “irony” with a capital “I”): The bill is being pushed by Illinois Congressman Bobby Rush… former Black Panther. So what we have is a black guy who is using written tests (Jim Crow voting rules, anyone?) to push gun control (pro-KKK anti-guns-for-the-black-folks laws in the post-Civil War South, anyone?).

I have a hard time seeing this sort of law, and those who support it, as anything less than outright treason.

Work on the Orion article continues, with more modeling. The modeling I’m fairly good at, the rendering… meh. To do it right would require a whole lot of texture map work, and I just don’t have the time for that. So… the Orions will look a bit bland, I guess.

I need to model the 20-meter Orion yet, as well as the Advanced Interplanetary Ship, and make some refinements to the Regular Interplanetary Ship.

One of the reasons why issue V2N2 of APR is late in getting out: illustrations for the Large Orions article are taking a while. This is nearing completion, but not quite there yet (obviously).

NOTE: Researching all this wacky stuff takes time and money. You can support the cause by Buying My Stuff, which includes aerospace drawings and documents, as well as the journal of unbuilt aircraft and spacecraft projects, Aerospace Projects Review.

Or just plain Give Me Money.

Now this is just friggen’ sad. And expensive.
The long beam of the law

THE NSW Police Force will spend about $2 million on a virtual reality shooting range as senior officers blame a lack of training for recruits being frightened of firearms.

Senior police say the lack of access to shooting ranges has resulted in some younger officers receiving so little practice that they are scared of using their guns.

Officers also claim their annual day-long firearms requalification training is inadequate, leaving them unprepared to use their weapons in dangerous situations.

Here’s my little suggestion to help the world: unless you show up for police training with basic familiarity with firearms and firearm safety… you don’t get the training. The result might well be a dearth of new cops. Well, there are two responses to that:

1) If your country has done such a good job of eliminating firearms that *cops* are afraid of ’em… then, gosh, your country must be pretty close to crime free (guns being, of course, the Source Of All Crime In The World), and thus you don’t need more cops. Well done. Go grab a low-calorie beer at the nearest smoke-free drinking establishment.

2) Your country has turned into a pussy-whipped, Brady Bunch version of itself, run by a bunch of robed sissies. Man up and re-introduce a proper firearms culture into your county. People *like* loud noises, things exploding and excitement. If you don’t give them a proper outlet – such as family trips to the gun range or hunting – they’ll come up with an improper outlet, such as robbery, murder or socialism (but I repeat myself).
