  1. Very cool photo and a bit of a trip back to memory lane to when I studied aeronautical engineering. I recall I quite enjoyed studying supersonic aerodynamics; it was easier than subsonic.

    (Just to be sure, it’s spelled Schlieren.)

  2. Real thing; shockwave generated contrails coming off of the canards:

    I’ve seen another photo of it with those as well as ones coming off the down-swept wingtips and tips of the vertical fins.

    I’ve occasionally seen it happen on airshows myself, usually with F-16s.
