A piece of Boeing Heavy Lift Helicopter artwork that was on ebay a while back. The XCH-62 HLH was an early 1970’s concept cancelled in ’74. The first prototype was under construction when cancelled; NASA tried to revive and finish the prototype in the 80’s, but got nowhere. The prototype was controversially turned into garbage at the US Army Aviation Museum in 2005. This was *not* a popular decision. nor was cancelling the thing in the first place; had it been built it would have had the ability to lift 22.5 tons.

This illustration shows it carrying a standard shipping container from a cargo vessel to shore. The container seems to contain fuel; it’s being used to refuel a Boeing Vertol UH-61, a design which competed against- and lost to – the Sikorsky S-60 Black Hawk.

So Disney fired “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn a while back because he made a number of pedophilia-ish Tweet “jokes” some years ago. The decision was made pretty fast and likely without a whole lot of reflection, no doubt due to the fear that corporations have these days of being associated with anyone who upsets the Internet Outrage Mob. But in this case, there were a whole lot of people who defended Gunn, including Guardian cast members. There have been rumors that Disney might change their minds and bring Gunn back. Maybe because that would be the right thing to do, and maybe, just maybe, and hear me out here, because “Guardians” is a gigantic money machine for Disney.

And then this happened:

Once again this is not an illegal thing, and on its own perhaps not that big of a deal. But in context, boy howdy did Gunn like him some pedo humor. To a ridiculously icky degree.

This sort of thing is only going to give the wrong sort of people bad ideas. Interestingly, this was actual news covered by CNN; I wonder if they had to break away from their 24/7 Trump Outrage coverage for this, and if they went back to Trump immediately afterwards.

At least the F-15s were on the spot seemingly right quick.

I suspect there’s gonna be a whole lot of CYA as a result of this.

The English language took over the world in no small part due to the fact that it is relatively simple, straightforward and does the job, while being ready to accept new words (cultural appropriate FTW, beeyotch!). So long as you didn’t care too much about its occasionally silly spellings (“knight,” “armour,” “enough” and so on), it’s pretty easy. It doesn’t have any of that silly gendering that a lot of languages have (and how does one go about determining the gender of something brand new? An airplane? A laser? A fusion reactor? A search engine?), and of course  in life there are only the two genders…

Oh, wait.

Not all cultures are equal. Some are better than others. Some are *way* better than others in *some* respects. This simple fact drives some people bugnuts; mention “American exceptionalism” unironically, and watch some heads explode. Part of what makes western civ so awesome is the incredibly useful and unifying English language. Another part of the awesomeness of western civ is the willingness to tolerate (i.e. allow to exist and not promptly crush underfoot) those who live within western civ yet who believe that western civ should be toppled and replaced by other cultures. But the dark flip side of that is that those who wish to undermine the west are free to try to do so. And one approach would be to destroy the English language. By turning it from a unifying force into an incoherent babble that’s good for little more than spreading outrage, the western civ underminers get closer to their goal. So the satire shown above? Perhaps not as far off the mark as might be expected.

A 1959 NASA depiction of the Ernst Stuhlinger “Umbrella” ship. This design was nuclear-electric, the electricity powering a bank of ion engines providing a trickle of high ISP thrust. The large circular “umbrella” was the radiator for the nuclear reactor, located at the far end of the “handle.” This design is a little different from the usual depiction with the crew compartment divided into two semi-toroidal segments. Normally this design is shown with a single torus with a maximum diameter much smaller than that of the radiator; here the crew compartments are shown to be relatively gigantic. I assume that this is artistic license as it also depicted the crew compartments as having *vast* circular windows in the floor. The crew compartments would spin (apparently independent of the rest of the ship) to generate some amount of artificial gravity to keep the crew healthy.

I’ve yammered on about what socialism is: the common ownership of the means of production. One thing I haven’t really touched on is the “democratic” part of “Democratic Socialism.” “Democracy” is almost always considered a good thing… but in many instances, it isn’t. When incorporated into socialism, it’s potentially nightmarish. Attend:

Democratic Socialism Threatens Minorities

The author points to a glowing description of “Democratic Socialism” that I have previously pointed and laughed at. One of the primary utopian fantasies of DS is that factories and the like would be controlled by the workers, with decisions made democratically. The creation of products would be a democratic process. What’s not to like about that? Well… pretty much anything, especially if what *you* might happen to want is not what the majority wants.

Instead of individual capitalists deciding what to produce in their endlessly varied, constantly competing private businesses, “without any democratic input from the rest of society,” control over industry and decisions about what to produce would reside in state planning agencies. And imagine their decisions perfectly, if improbably, reflect the actual democratic will of workers, whether in the nation; or a state, like Ohio or Utah; or a metropolitan area, like Maricopa County or Oklahoma City.

Popular control is finally realized! So: How popular is Islam? How many Muslim prayer rugs would the democratic majority of workers vote to produce? How many Korans? How many head scarves? How much halal meat would be slaughtered? What share of construction materials would a majority of workers apportion to new mosques?

Under capitalism, the mere existence of buyers reliably gives rise to suppliers. Relying instead on democratic decisions would pose a big risk for Muslims. And Sikhs. And Hindus. And Jews. And maybe even Catholics.

Look at the products I produce: CAD models of generally somewhat obscure aerospace and sci-fi vehicles; historical publications about *really* obscure aerospace vehicles; and as-yet-unpublished science fiction. In an economy that cannot provide everything to everyone, these sort of products would *never* win any sort of election. the only way they are available to those relatively tiny minority of folks who might want them is because their creation, manufacture and sales are *not* open to the democratic process.

Look at it another way: there are, let’s say, fifty auto manufacturing facilities in a democratic socialist region. What cars are the worker going to vote to produce? Some will vote to produce Supercars, because they’re awesome. Some will vote to produce cars that are easy to produce. How many will vote to produce the most economically profitable cars? What if every factory decides to manufacture Ferraris?

Unsurprisingly, the smoke from the fires out west is visible from the ISS and weather satellites. Behold:

In Photos: The 2018 California Wildfires as Seen from Space

This one is quite enlightening;

It would not surprise me if that much smoke has had a noticeable effect on the local climate. I know that my air conditioner usage has dropped precipitously in the last several days… the temperature outside might not have dropped much, but the sun beats down less horrendously.

A second thought occurs looking at that photo. The news lately has been filled with dire warnings of environmental DOOOOM, that we are at or perhaps beyond the tipping point for “Hothouse Earth,” that the environmentalists long con to deprive mankind of nuclear power has succeeded, and the four extra decades of reliance upon carbon emitting fossil fuels has doomed mankind to extinction: the environmentalist goals all along, seemingly. If this is in fact the case, that the planet is going to see substantial temperature increases and climatological nightmares, then it’s time to start geoengineering in earnest. With new projections of up to two hundred feet in sea level rise, Doing Something About That would seem to become just about National Priority Number One. OK, so what to do? Look at that photo above again. The California fire smoke covers a good fraction of the western US, and it’s a bit brighter than the ground below. The smoke almost certainly reflects more sunlight back out into space than the ground below would have with clear skies. So at least in the short term, the smoke is working to reverse global warming. Of course the emitted CO2 isn’t helping. But it need not be smoke from burning forests. Imagine if, instead, that was *water* being injected into the atmosphere. Massive nuclear reactors attached to massive pumps along the coast. Bring in solar power: use huge banks of solar reflectors to boil vast quantities of water to steam, and shoot that steam far into the sky from atop mountain peaks and the like. Create large banks of artificial clouds to reflect sunlight out into space. As a bonus, the clouds will probably not stay airborne too long and will come back down as rain. Look at that photo again: the region covered by those smoke clouds could *really* benefit from increased rainfall.

Bernie Sanders wants to spend $36 trillion over ten years to provide free medicaid to people who should be providing for their own healthcare. Imagine what $36 trillion could do to really aid “the common welfare” if spent on massive civil engineering projects. Heck, marry the two together: projects like this, along with projects to build vast water transfer systems to take floodwaters from the Mississippi River to drought zones like Montana and the Ogalala Aquifer region, would require a *lot* of workers over a generation or two. So if you want free Medicare… sign up for the Project. Provides good pay, good food, decent housing and free health care to all those who drive bulldozers, swing pickaxes, perform calculations, design pipelines and pumps.

Hmmm.

The massive failure of Democratic Socialists in yesterday’s primaries

Every single candidate endorsed by celebrity Democratic Socialist politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was beaten by establishment Democrats in yesterday’s primaries.  And not just beaten – they were, in most cases, slaughtered.

On one hand, that is of course good. Democratic Socialists are monsters who would turn the American economy into the Venezuelan economy and spark a civil war, likely handing the world over to the Chinese in the process; keeping them away from the reins of power is as vital as keeping shotguns out of the hands of toddlers.

On the other hand, the fact that the Democrats have fallen so far to the Left that outright socialists actually stood a chance… that bodes poorly for the future. Yes, the Forces Of Darkness yesterday overcame the Forces Of Even Darker Darkness, but what about 2020? Will the Democratic Socialists come back even stronger? Was this a blip, or the beginning of a trend?

On the gripping hand: it *might* be that Republican challengers would have better luck against the more clearly whackadoo DemSocs than against the establishment Dems. And of course, even if the DemSocs might do ok in a few districts, holding them up as the Future Of The Democrats might help the Republicans further afield. Would it be worth it to elect a Castro-wannabe or two if it led to a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate? Maybe.

Well, there’s still idiotchild Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the Democratic party nominee. She will very likely win… and her insane ideas, broadcast widely and wisely, just might be enough to spur enough sane people to vote against the party of the New Holodomor to prevent a Dem takeover. I wouldn’t bet on it, though. The Republicans, and even worse, the Libertarians, just plain stink at taking advantage of a situation.

Here’s one of those Prager U videos that just make the whole concept of Prager U confusing. On one hand, they crank out videos on the subject of science and religion that are, to be blunt, damned dumb. And there’s this kind on the topic of politics and the current culture, which make a lot of sense.

Modern Western societies villify masculinity. The result of that we can see: the rise of the “soy boys,” the rise of the Incels, the rise of MGTOW; the collapse of the familty, the collapse of the rule of law. Generations of boys raised without fathers, fathers to train those boys to become proper men who know and understand and *incorporate* the concept of responsibility. We’re creating a generation of males who are split between the weak-willed, shallow basement dwelling “beta males” who would no sooner fight to defend themselves or others from *real* threats than they’d dare let someone disagree with them online without calling them a Nazi… and the feral idiot monsters who think that rape and murder and theft are fun and a proper way to spend an afternoon because they did not grow up with a male role model who taught them otherwise. What will be the end result of this? A culture in collapse, ripe for plunder. A culture dominated by the SJWs… at least until it is taken over by invaders from outside, invaders who have no time for the SJWs or the beta males. This is an ongoing process in the western world. The US is being  demographically taken over by latin America; Europe is being taken over by the near east and northern Africa. The passive male will not be the future. The SJW will not be the future either. Those blue-tinted mental illness haircuts will be hidden from view soon enough. Soft dandyish Romans did not last long once the Vandals and Visigoths got to them. Those who survived found themselves either trying to scratch out a living in ruins or hauled off to the slave markets.
