An article here:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2011/03/18/134597833/cosmonaut-crashed-into-earth-crying-in-rage?ft=1&f=1026

Has the last, really unpleasant open-casket photo of Soviet Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov… and further down, an audio recording of his last words. Would any Russian-speakers be interested in translating?

The article (which, coming as it does from NPR, somehow fails to blame everything on Republicans) describes the forthcoming book Starman by Jamie Doran and Piers Bizony. Komarov seems to come across as a certifiable hero, while the Soviet governmental system comes across as a nightmare (again, surprising coming from NPR). Komarov apparently knew he was doomed *before* he even got in the capsule… and he only did so because if he had refused, the Soviets would have tossed in the backup cosmonaut, one Yuri Gagarin. Komarov’s last conversation (with Alexsei Kosygin) is described as him yelling that he’s been murdered.

This is distressingly accurate:

When you’ve watched this a dozen or times and have absorbed and understood it (and the implications), keep this in mind: the same politicians who have so thoroughly screwed up the American space program are the same politicians who would be in charge of the American health care system under Obamacare.

A lot of people have seen this video, showing the self-appointed mascot of the Wisconsin teachers union eloquently stating his position:

[youtube TZ0dJM3h-tE]

A longer clip is viewable HERE.

This screeching goofball has been identified as on Fred Levenhagen, who teaches eighth grade in the Lake County School District.

Better still, apparently he teaches “social studies,” and pulls down a paltry $94,937 in salary and bennies. Plus, he no doubt had a “doctors note” that day, so all his energetic screaming was done while he was clearly quite ill. Either that… or quite possibly he got one of those fraudulent doctors notes. In other words… he lied.

So, the question now becomes… since he feels it’s entirely appropriate for someone to interrupt others and scream repetitively, how is he going to react when one of his students stands up in the middle of class and starts yelling “Fred lies! Fred lies! Fred lies!”

Now, as to the larger topic of a government employee union taking some hits from the government: even FDR, “champion” of the socialist classes, knew that unionizing government workers was a bad idea.

Letter on the Resolution of Federation of Federal Employees Against Strikes in Federal Service

All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress. Accordingly, administrative officials and employees alike are governed and guided, and in many instances restricted, by laws which establish policies, procedures, or rules in personnel matters.

Unions like to cast themselves in the role of fighting against greedy employers. But in this case, the employer is the state government of Wisconsin… which is, when you come right down to it, the people of Wisconsin. So the teachers union is fighting against the people of Wisconsin.

The British government seems to take a really bizarre view of “squatters rights.”

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1361061/Father-John-Hamilton-Brown-begs-squatters-letterbox.html

After squatters moved into John Hamilton-Brown’s new £1million five bedroom home he has been forced to beg them to get out through his letterbox.

The group of foreigners were granted legal aid to fight to stay – while he was forced to represent himself.

One of the squatters, who said he was 20, told the Sunday Telegraph: ‘There are many empty homes and we should be able to live wherever we want.’

Shoreditch County Court refused to issue an interim possession order forcing them to vacate the property within 24 hours because of a technicality – and it could now be six weeks before they are told have to go.

The house is not abandoned, but legally owned. The squatters are thus tresspassing. Why can’t the police simply march in and arrest everyone? Were this Texas, the homeowner would, I believe, be allowed to kick in the door and start shooting. Which might explain why I don’t see the same sort of story out of Texas…

Additionally: if it’s legal for the trespassers to be in there, then it’d be legal for *other* tresspassers to be in there. Perhaps a bunch of neighbors could get together, force the door open, and march in? If the do so right after a local soccer or rugby game… why, it’d hardly be unexpected if a fight broke out and some people got roughed up and tossed out into the street, would it?

Intern learns the hard way that it’s illegal to recite the Gettysburg Address on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial without a permit

Step 1: Be six foot four and skinny

Step 2: Dress up like Abe Lincoln

Step 3: Go to the Lincoln Memorial on Presidents Day

Step 4: Start reciting the Gettysburg Address

Step 5: Get interrupted by a Park Service cop who tells you he can fine you for giving a speech without a permit

Step 6: Move down off the steps of the Memorial

Step 7: Start speaking again

Step 8: A friend passes around a basket to the cheering tourists and they toss in a couple bucks

Step 9: Same cop again interrupts and asks if you have a vending permit

Step 10: Cop passes out a few $100 tickets

Step 11: …

Step 12: Profit! (The government, that is…)

One of the Constitutional arguements against Obamacare (beyond the fact that there’s nothing in the Constitution saying it’s the job of the government to provide healthcare… thus makign the whole damned thing unConstitutional) rests on the point that Obamacare tells each and every American citizen that they must, under penalty of law, buy insurance from an insurance company. If the government can tell people that they MUST buy one thing, then there’s no reason why the government can’t tell people they MUST buy some other things, and then some other thing, and then that thing over there…

South Dakota got the message.

Bill would require all S.D. citizens to buy a gun

Here is the text:

FOR AN ACT ENTITLED, An Act to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:
Section 1. Not later than January 1, 2012, each citizen residing in the state of South Dakota who has attained the age of twenty-one years shall purchase or otherwise acquire a firearm suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and personal preference sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.
Section 2. After January 1, 2012, each citizen residing in the state of South Dakota shall comply with the provisions of this Act within six months of attaining the age of twenty-one years.
Section 3. The provisions of this Act do not apply to any person who is disqualified from possessing a firearm pursuant to §§ 22-14-15, 22-14-15.1, or 22-14-15.2.

If you believe it’s within the power of the US FedGuv to order you to buy insurance, explain why it’s *not* within the power of a stateguv or fedguv to order you to buy a gun. After all, guns are protected under the Constitution (healthcare is not even mentioned) as being a requirement of the militia, and the US federal code defines the militia as every male over the age of 18… and since we’re all modernized people, we can assume a lack of sexism and thus the militia includes all the womenfolk as well.
