Two weird things. First this headline…

The Russian military says the damaged Moskva missile cruiser sank while being towed to a port

… is exactly the same text as the complete article:

The Russian military says the damaged Moskva missile cruiser sank while being towed to a port.

So… there ya go, I suppose.

Second: more than a day later and not a single verified image of the thing. How can *nobody* have taken photos pf video of it? Surely there were at least a few commercial satellites passing roughly int he area that took a look. No doubt more than a few recon planes were in the area. The Russians must have had ships in the area, taking pictures to prove it was still on the surface; and doubtless Ukrainians with drones or navalized farm tractors video’ed it to prove that it wasn’t doing so great. But so far as I’ve seen… squadoo. A number or mis-attributed photos and videos of other ships, one craptacular “night vision” video showing… *something.*

Whoopsie:

Russian Navy Confirms Severe Damage to Black Sea Cruiser Moskva, Crew Abandoned Ship

The Moskva was (*was*) the most important Russian naval vessel in the Black Sea, until it’s ammunition caught fire. Stories differ about *why* it caught fire… the Ukrainians claim to have struck the ship with missiles, the Russians claim… well, not much.

A day or so ago, the Moskva was going to be a giant threat to the Ukrainians. Now it’s apparently a burning hulk.

A week ago:

Russia’s Most Powerful Warship In The Black Sea Is Operating In A Pattern

Yeah, maybe operating in a predictable pattern isn’t the best idea, especially when you’re in range of people you have pissed off.

Interesting if true:

Russia may have lost one fifth of their combat power in Ukraine, say Western officials

Seems like guesswork, but given how badly things have gone for the Russians… it may be true. A month and a half after essentially invading Kansas and Russias army has lost around 20% of their capability? A few more months and they’ll be under 50%. At that point, the Chinese will be looking *real* *hard* at Siberia. Finland might decide to just walk in and take their territory back.

It’s the 80’s all over again, just not quite in order. Right now we’ve got the 70’s as far as feckless and incompetent leadership, flailing their way through economic troubles including inflation, but 80’s music has had a resurgence. And now Ukrainians are remaking one of the best American movies of the 80’s:

How many Ukrainians armed with man-portable anti-tank rockets yell “Eat me!” when they pull the trigger? I can assure you that there has been a  *lot* of “avenge me!” bandied about over there.

Also: if you want one of the most laughable reviews of “Red Dawn,” one that could not be made today with anything remotely resembling a straight face… well, here ya go:

“Oh, boo hoo, the Soviets are portrayed as the villains.” Yeah. They’re portrayed doing almost *exactly* the sort of things that are happening RIGHT FRIGGEN’ NOW. “Those dastardly right wing film makers showed Russian troops killing kids at a school!” yeah. Who could have imagined THAT ever happening.

Wait, the Russians really did dig trenches near Chernobyl?

Consider: Russias invasion of Ukraine has not gone well. They’ve lost a *lot* of troops and equipment; it has become apparent that the Russian military seems to have some serious problems with maintenance and logistics. Ukraine has shown that a lot of Russias perceived power doesn’t seem to exist, or exists in the form of rickety junk.

Putin invaded in order to rebuilt the Russian Empire. But as Russia pours it’s apparently unpectacular and limited military equipment into the black hole that is Ukraine, could some of the other regions and states that Russia has bullied decide that Now’s The Time? If Russia ends up drawing troops away from Chechnya and Georgia and the like, could *they* rise up to throw out the Russians? Could China change its plans from “let’s take Taiwan” to “let’s take Siberia?”

Is it conceivable that this could end up being one of the more spectacular self-owns in history… a project to expand an empire ends up ending the empire?

Ha.

Bonus video: this one claims to be a strike on a Russian convoy in the Donbas region. But… none of the vehicles are moving. I don’t see troops running away. It looks almost like someone is tearing up a road full of abandoned hardware, which seems maybe wasteful. Surely there are *some* farmers around to tow away some of the untrashed vehicles?
