The cover of “Space Manufacturing 5” has as a background illustration a portion of a “blueprint” of a Bernal Sphere-tpye space colony. What it doesn;t have is any further information on the full diagram or who drew it. I’d be grateful for any tips.

  1. can this be a work of Don Davis?
he made alot illustrations for O’niell

  2. It appears to be the exact same design that Don Davis illustrated for The High Frontier. I can’t say if he did *that* specific drawing, but at the very least, it was either derived from his work, or derived from the same source that Don Davis worked from. Also, the closest matching image I can find online is a primitive CAD drawing 3/4 of the way down this page ( http://ssi.org/space-art/ssi-sample-slides/ ) which says “Based upon work by Don Davis”.

  3. Damn, beat me by 3 minutes while I was marshaling my evidence. 😉

  4. I dunno if it is Don Davis drawings or not but it is definitely an O’Neill Island One cutout coming straight from the “High Frontier” book (I checked my copy to be sure of that).

  5. The drawing is descended from my diagram of a Bernal Sphere, at:

Although some design changes are apparent, such as something extending from the agricultural section, elaborations on the axis structures, and in the case of the small CAD drawing additional mirrors on the sunward side.

  6. Hi Don nice to meet you!!
I always appreciated you nice drawings related to the outstanding O’Neill projects.

  7. GASP…Don Davis in person !

you do a wounderfull work and Art

  8. Actually I have seen the entire blueprint (the Space Studies Institute placed a copy of it on their page size envelopes years ago), The designer was Gerard O’Neill himself. You would have to contact SSI directly to obtain a copy.
