Picked up the external hard drive from the data recovery people. Appears to have been a “perfect” recovery, all data. The problem with the original data was with the firmware (the hardwired-in software the runs the drive itself), probably caused by electrical power problems. The drive with the recovered data is currently hooked up to the laptop, which is hooked up to *another* new backup drive. Data is slowly copying over. Looks like it’ll be a job of many hours.

  1. Next thing to do: Go on ebay, find a 3ware raid card (2 is enough ports, four is better) and build either a RAID1 or better a RAID5 array so you can lose one drive and not have to panic. I have two in service and they’re worth the investment.

  2. Welcome back.

You’re overdue for some good news.

  3. The awesome thing is that I’ve got more *bad* news. It’ll just take a week or so to fully figure out if it’s “annoying bad” or “well, time to go” bad.

  4. Which sense of time to go? Hang in there.

    Yes.

  6. Funny you should mention a 3ware card; I just copied all my data OFF of my 3ware card, and ONTO a software raid setup, because I was worried about losing my 3ware card, and then losing all access to my data.

If the data is behind an OS raid setup, I can lose my CPU, motherboard, RAM, SATA controller, etc. and my data would still be easily recoverable on any system.

I was worried that 3ware might not even exist in the future when my card fails; they were just bought and sold once or twice.
