The next few decades should see this sort of thing become epicly entertaining:

Medical treatment carries possible side effect of limiting homosexuality

Short form: a few dozen female babies are born every year with a hormonal problem that makes their nads look like those of a male. This can be tested for in the womb, and can be treated with a hormone treatment. Side effects seem to be that the female baby will be sorta extra-feminine behaviorwise (not entirely sure what that means, but if my reading of sitcoms has taught me anything, I guess that means a predilection for purses, shopping, shoes, the color pink and screaming like a banshee over Justin Bieber)… and, entertainingly, reducing the chances that the female baby will become a lesbian.

This has of course outraged Certain Groups.

For years the arguement has raged over whether homosexuality is a learned behavior or “born that way.” I think by this point it’s pretty well established that for probably a sizable majority, it has biological roots, not just mental choices and upbringing. This is both good and bad news for advocates of homosexuality… if it’s biology-based, then the “moral stigma” should go away. But if it’s biology based… it can be medically “treated.”

And before Other Certain Groups start celebrating because “yay, a few pills and we can make all the gays go away,” keep in mind that if you can treat a baby in the womb to make it not-gay, you can almost certainly treat a baby in the womb to make it gay.

I think I’ll sit this one out.

  1. While this mildly interesting in itself, there is carried with it some other things. Not all of the other things are related to homosexuality.

I’m not sure what I think of the origin of homosexuality. Of the homosexuals I know I know, about 3/4ths of them make a point of it and even hit on me; from this I have suggested they do it in order to avoid dealing with women (who can be confusing and demanding) or with men (who can be confusing and demanding). I think much of their public announcements and pressures to gain acceptance are done to make them feel better about what they do by forcing the rest of the world to say they’re normal.

What has always made me curious about the subject of the cited article is the centrality of copulation in our society. Hollywood — however one defines it — is a basic source of the thought. They do it because people will pay to see it, of course. But why do people pay to see it? Partly because they can’t get it in real life, yes. But maybe partly because there’s nothing else to do that is exciting.

Now that the world has been mapped, the Moon conquered, the seas charted, all the mountains climbed, what’s left? Going to other countries has usually required shots and visas and passports, but only in the few decades have other countries become dangerous. There are warlords, sociopathic governments, paranoid drug dealers, and the usual criminals, all preying on Westerners.

So we stay at home and … screw?

  2. Treating fetuses to induce homosexuality would cause some serious outrage. Homosexuality is de facto equivalent to sterility, it’s a distinct reproductive disadvantage and hence a defect (not a PC word for it, but honest). Trying to cripple one’s own children is generally looked down on in our society, so I can easily see laws being passed to restrict such orientation-assignment techniques to pro-heterosexual treatments only.

Now cue outraged comparisons to racial eugenics programs in three…two…one…

  3. > Trying to cripple one’s own children is generally looked down on in our society

There are deaf parents who not only refuse to treat their deaf children… there are deaf people who get outraged when hearing parents treat their deaf children (cochlear implants and such). They see themselves as a separate “culture” or some damned thing.

  4. I can imagine parents inducing homosexuality in an attempt to reduce the number of children born to the next generation. Thoughtful, aware yuppies can be a danger to society, in many ways.

  5. Re: the Deaf “Culture” people. I look forward to the day their children start suing them for intentionally crippling their offspring. I still have difficulty believing that such behavior by the parents isn’t already illegal.

Re: yuppies. Yeah, but then they become a self-solving problem. Hopefully anyway.

  6. Folks,

    Um… huh?

This article is about the use of hormone treatments to prevent ill formed genitalia happening to female babies.

The article notes that among women who were born with this condition there is a larger percentage of them who are not heterosexual.

The conclusion then is that the use of this hormone treatment can reduce the number of lesbians.

    Huh????? WTF!!!!

There are plenty of lesbians out there who never suffered from ambiguous genitalia at birth.

This article sounds like utter bullshit to me. Lotsa speculation with little facts to back it up. Among the women who were born with this condition then perhaps the physical results lead them to shy away from male partners and seek out female ones due to the women being “more understanding” or some such.

Linking this physical condition to be an absolute determinating cause of female homosexuality is pretty damn absurd.

    Madoc

  7. >The conclusion then is that the use of this hormone treatment can reduce the number of lesbians.

While I’m sure there are a fair number of “girlie” lesbians, the stereotype of the “butch” lesbian exists for a reason.
