… to the Israel/Gaza issue. Actually, several solutions:
1) Israel, right now, declares that Gaza is its own sovereign nation. Build a good solid border around it. Disallow trade and travel across that border if they wish, but end the naval blockade. Then, when Hamas inevitably starts launching rockets into Israel… declare total war and destroy the region utterly. Used armored bulldozers to push the entire region into the Mediterranean. Rebuild to taste. Rename it “New Strasbourg” or “New Oder-Neisse” and dare the EU to complain about it.
2) End the naval blockade. Wait for Hamas to stir thing up; launch well-targetted raids into Gaza and against incoming vessels. Collect the weapons to be used against Israel, especially rockets. Build a large cache over a period of years… then launch them randomly back into Gaza. When outsiders complain, point to news articles of those rockets being shot into Israel and the world not giving a rats ass.
3) Keep the current blockade. But announce that any ship entering waters near Gaza will be fired upon with rockets equivalent to Hamas’ “Qassam” rockets. However, these rockets, while based on the Qassam design, will be built by Israeli industry using proper materials and standards. Since they’ll be cheap, having no electronics of note, rest assured there’ll be a lot of them.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Strange but true the latter solution it is something I would entirely quote….like beat your enemy wiht its own arms.
Ac tually, the long-term best solution for Gaza would be for the Gazans to rise up… and kill the leadership of Hamas. Try again with a leadership that *doesn’t* want the people to kill themselves in an attempt to Wipe Out The Jews.
Fight? Did someone say there was a fight somewhere?
Well, let’s get a move on it then, lest it be over ‘fore we get there.
Shar, and if the lads don’t have their shillelaghs out and are looking to bust some Kosher ass: http://www.truthout.org/former-un-official-urges-irish-americans-defend-rachel-corrie60110
Meanwhile, the Israeli commandos started loading their splat guns with green paintballs.
That’s just about the most retarded thing I’ve seen today.
First off, the proper Israeli response to any ship named after noted World Class Moron Rachel Corrie is to run the damned thing over with a supertanker.
Second, if the Israelies can’t scrounge up a supertanker in time, they should board it the moment it hits the blockade and sieze the vessel. Then pack it full of Qassam rockets (in crates labelled “Baby Milk”) and turn it around and sail it to Cyprus with the publicized purpose of handing over the rockets to the Greek Cypriots. Fortunately, the Turks have already voiced theior support for this general sort of thing, so I’m *sure* they won’t have a problem with that.
And the Irish have had their time supporting terrorists. With IRA bagman Teddy The U-Boat Commander now busily swimming the seas of Irish Catholic Hell, Irish-descended Americans can and should sit out supporting Hamas.
The other ones weren’t anywhere near the blockade line when the commandos boarded them at night.
If the Israelis wanted a controlled operation, they should have waited till morning to try and stop them.
If you were sitting around one night expecting the police to come to the door with a search warrant next morning, and instead black uniformed commandos started coming down lines from a helicopter onto the roof of your house without warning, you might react a bit badly also.
…and the worst weapons the Israelis seem to have found on the ships that were heading to Gaza…which they impounded and searched…were knives, baseball bats, and slingshots.
> The other ones weren’t anywhere near the blockade line when the commandos boarded them at night.
While that was bad from a PR perspective, they were certainly within their rights. Teh ships had already announced their intention to run the blockmade, which pretty much makes them lawful targets.
> If the Israelis wanted a controlled operation, they should have …
… used torpedos.
> the worst weapons the Israelis seem to have found on the ships …
… was propaganda. The Israelis are in a damned do/don’t position. Let the terrorist sympathizers get through, and show weakness and delegitimize the blockade. Stop them, and be portrayed as monsters. Well… this is the Middle East. It’s better to be feared than sneered there.
“Ac tually, the long-term best solution for Gaza would be for the Gazans to rise up… and kill the leadership of Hamas.”
You’re forgetting: the people of Gaza elected Hamas. They freely chose to be ruled by a group which was formed to drive the Jews into the sea and which does worse damage to itself and its fellow Gazans than Israel ever could.
> the people of Gaza elected Hamas.
Yes, and the people of Germany elected Hitler, the people of Venezuela elected Chavez, etc. Sometimes people choose… poorly. And they suffer for it. The best way to end their suffering is to reverse their poor choces. The best way to end their suffering and make sure it doesn’t come back anytime soon is to reverse their poor choices as quickly and as harshly as possible.
The Germans could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they’d shot Hitler in 1939 or even 1941. They chose not to. So, they got the fun and excitement of the next four years (or fifty years, if they had the bad judgement to be in the eastern part of the country). The Gazans could end the blockades and Israeli animosity if they made a demonstration of their willingness to correct their mistakes.
Not gonna happen, of course. So I’m gonna have to stik with Option A. Maybe I should invest in some Caterpillar stock…
I understand what you’re saying. I’m simply saying that I don’t think that this is a realistic solution, considering the circumstances.
Well, no, it’s not. It’s about as realistic as the world’s population agreeing on a planetary motto… “Don’t Be A Dumbass,” and actually agreeign on what that *means.*
The only realistic one is Option A. Be nice to ’em, and when they bite you, push them into Egypt and wash your hands of them.
An addendum to option A: major enginnering works. Specifically, empty out Gaza, and then scrape Gaza down to below sea (Med) level. Turn it into a *real* shallow sea, maybe 3-6 inches. Take the scrapings and use them to build artificial islands off the coast of Israel a little north.
So democracy is great as long as the right people (in our opinion) get elected?
And your alternative to uncontrolled democracy would be?
As Churchill said: “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.”
The Israelis seem better positioned to push the Gazans into the sea than Hamas pushing the Israelis into the sea, unless it’s the Dead Sea.
Some of the biggest critics of this whole mess have been in the Israeli press, who think their government is behaving in a completely irrational and violent manner that sounds like how the Nazis used to deal with the Jews, rather than how Jews should behave towards Palestinians.
Recently, a Gazan rocket killed a Thai worker in Israel…so what exactly was someone from Thailand doing working in Israel?
Simple – the Palestinians used to make up a vast impoverished labor force for Israel, like blacks did for South Africa…but when the entry points into Gaza were shut down, Israel had to go looking far afield to find people who would work for low wages doing things that Israelis themselves found beneath their dignity for the few shekels that were being offered.
Historically, many a country has found it profitable to employ some ethnic group of people who can be relied upon to do the shit work while the ruling class simultaneously despises them, relies on them…and fears that someday they will try to get even for the way they have been treated, like how the slaves under Spartacus took on Rome.
At the moment in Israel it’s the Palestinians; in the US it’s the Mexicans, which is one reason that immigration reform won’t happen anytime soon – too many people rely on cheap undocumented workers to do jobs that whites wouldn’t do for the pay being offered.
And why a prosperous Gaza will never be allowed to exist by Israel with its current government; there’s nothing like the threat of starvation to act as an incentive for workers to find even very low wages acceptable.
So Gaza ends up like a cross between Concentration Camp Dora and the Warsaw Ghetto, a blighted and blasted walled-in area where the slave laborers live in near starvation.
Elections in Gaza are as democratic as elections in Saddam’s Iraq, different colored ballots for different parties, and all who vote for the “wrong” party are beaten and harassed, their property stolen or destroyed. Yep, their is that Democrat Party style democracy.
America should not have stopped the Israelis 45 years ago, and this would all be ancient history and the “palestinians” would all be living happy productive and successful lives today.
And we would not be having this Muslim terrorism we are today, either.
> So democracy is great as long as the right people (in our opinion) get elected?
You’re finally catching on.
> And your alternative to uncontrolled democracy would be?
Who says there needs to be an alternative?
Choices have consequences. If you *choose* to elect murderous nutjobs to lead and represent you, you are also choosing the consequences of that.
> their government is behaving in a completely irrational and violent manner that sounds like how the Nazis used to deal with the Jews
1) The Israelies aren’t exterminating anyone.
2) The non-Jewish Germans outnumbered the Jews by a *lot.* The Israelies are vastly outnumbered *by* the Muslims,
Keep in mind, the “Palestinians” are not a people apart; they are jsut Arabs. Specifically, they used to be Jordanians. But the nation of Jordan in the end didn’t want them… Jordan decided that it was in Jordan’s long term best interest to cut them loose and use them as pawns.
> Israel had to go looking far afield to find people who would work for low wages …
… and not promise to wipe out the Israelies. Would *you* knowingly hire someone who has sworn to kill your family?
> And why a prosperous Gaza will never be allowed to exist by Israel with its current government; there’s nothing like the threat of starvation to act as an incentive for workers to find even very low wages acceptable.
Wow, that’s incredibly bad logic even for you. If Gaza was prosperous and, *importantly,* non-threatening, Israel would have:
1) A good trading partner
2) Less need to expend treasure on defending agaisnt ’em
3) Still a whole bunch of Thais to hire to do the crap jobs.
The Israelies are capitalists. Capitalists like for as many people to be as rich as possible… that way they can buy your stuff. It’s the socialists who want vast fields of the poverty-stricken.
“And we would not be having this Muslim terrorism we are today, either.”
Not necessarily. A lot of that funding comes through Iran and Saudi Arabia, both of which have little to do with Gaza and the West Bank except that they ALSO fund terrorism in those places, and they like to keep the place poor in order to keep a convenient set of victims to tug at the world’s heartstrings with.
[…] not exactly what I suggested here in the comments on June 3rd, but it’s […]
Bri, my point is that had the Israelis been allowed to kill the founders of international terrorism, swiftly and without mercy, publicly, the way they were at the start of the Yasir Arafat era, the money men would have seen it as a losing proposition and turned elsewhere. As it is America, and the UN and NATO, stopped them, forced them to back off and allow international terrorism to metastasize into the child and women killing cancer it now is.
An anonymous quote from many sources, and as true now as it has always been. “The worst atrocities throughout human history all began with half measures, with apologies and compromising with the wrong people, shrinking from what had to be done.”
As for your point about Saudi Arabia, they were the leaders of the Arab League, who systematically destroyed every chance for the “palestinians” to have any kind of life. The Jews did not drive those people of their lands, they bought the worst, most difficult to farm land FROM “palestinian” people, and worked until it was productive. Once the leaders of “Arab” nations, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, the major Bedouin tribes all saw what the Jews did with the crap land, and it was they who dispossessed the “palestinians” from their lands, forced them into camps, killed their leaders and created what now exists in the Middle East today.
The Jews worked to keep the original occupants on their lands, brought them into the government that was created in ’48 and ’49, because from the start they understood what the “Arab” nations were doing, had been doing from the end of WWI until the formation of the Jewish State. All the peoples of The Palestine Mandate, Muslims, Jews and Christians, always knew that the Arabs were the enemy, and the Arabs merely use religion as a weapon. Always have.
