Now available is a 16-page PDF file copy of a 1941 WWII German Focke Wulf presentation on their “Grosstransporter” (Large Transporter) aircraft design. Capable of transporting 400 troops, this was an eight-engined monster of a plane listed as the FW 249 or FW 95 in various other sources. Packed with illustrations… isometrics, iso cutaways, wing construction diagrams, three-view, inboard profile. A lot of info on a rarely seen design.
Air Doc 19 can be downloaded for only $4.00.

I wonder why it never occurred to them to use a high wing, which would have led in the direction of a C-130 type configuration? Putting all those landing gear in fuselage sponsons would probably have been much lighter, stronger, and simpler, and the ramp would have been shorter, shallower and lighter, instead of an impractical ski slope. They also needed balancing struts to hold up the tail. Not well thought out.
Probably expediencey?
Easier to expand an existing framework (this looks like a Ju-90/Ju-290 )
The Me-323/Me-321 were high wing gliders , as were a number of the Gotha Gliders (The germans used both powered and unpowered gliders!?)
The Blohm & Voss BV 144 however was perhaps the first in the line of new generation tactical transport using high wing. It made a late appearance in 1944 and was used subsequently by the ‘Free French’ Forces.
Never heard of this one, which looks like competition for the Ju-390.
I’d really enjoy seeing them get that Panzer up that ramp. Or down it. It’s silly.
