is this a early design of MOL ?
Yeah, the apparent lack of a transtage is odd, although this photo shows the checkerboard paint pattern is at the base of the transtage, not the MOL itself:

But that doesn’t agree with the external conduits on the MOL/second stage in the painting.

Yes. It does show a transtage, but it appears terribly foreshortened. The two reddish squarish blobs just forward of the checkerboard are two of the four RCS units projecting out the side of the transtage.
