Art class girl loses eight fingers after putting hands in plaster of Paris

A pupil has lost eight fingers after putting her hands in plaster of Paris, suffering agonising burns in a horrific classroom  blunder.

The 19-year-old’s terrifying ordeal began when the liquid quickly set around her skin, creating temperatures of up to 60C.

Frantic classmates and her teacher desperately tried to hack off the plaster with hammers. She was rushed to hospital with her hands wedged in the solidified block.

Photos of the aftermath at the link.

Clearly, Something Needs To Be Done. Perhaps a system of registering such  “assault art materials.” A licensing system where an art instructor needs to pass a rigorous series of tests and be issued a government ID before being allowed to distribute carefully measured quantities of plaster – say, one gram at a time – to students.

For the children.

  1. I have my doubts. I was a kid once, and I used plaster of paris, and I don’t remember any heat.

  2. I’ve used plaster (and similar substances) rather a lot, and I *do* remember heat. But I don’t recall being dumb enough to think that letting a big-ass block of plaster set up around my hands, encasign them in something not unlike concrete, was a good idea.

  3. The heat from the plaster of paris setting comes from the chemical reaction of the process. Those bonds are being created and usually solidification reactions are exothermic. Hence the heat. I had an experience where I was using ordinary crazy glue and a catalyst and nearly burned myself.

  4. I just didn’t remember heat. I can only assume that, like admin, I was bright enough to avoid leaving my hand in it.

This does remind me of an advertisement sent to me a couple of years ago. Someone was selling a kit that would permit one to make a cast of an erect penis. I never gave the idea much thought, but perhaps that kit could be marketed to men who have no reason to breed, if prolonged contact would cause removal of that part of the body.
