I came across this horrid little monster near the Mantua reservoir today. With the low temepratures, it was moving pretty slow. Now, I’m not an arachnophobe, but this little thing gave me the screamin’ willies. It’s abdomen was about 5/8″ (call it 1.7 cm) wide.
Guess what? It ties right in with your pets.
It’s a female Cat-Faced Spider: http://www.wildutah.us/h_spider_cat.html
(the males are smaller and have a lot thinner abdomen).
It probably can bite, but it’s not going to do any major harm.

Oh and favored prey is other spiders. They tend to keep the Black Widow population down when they are around. IF you can get used to the looks :o)
Wife and I are both arachnaphobic to a degree but we managed to live with one of these hanging out by our front door for around three years.
