Kavanaugh made it through the Senate and is now a Supreme Court Justice. On one hand this can be seen as a victory by the forces of rationality and justice over the forces of mob mentality and hysterical screeching. but on the other hand… the vote was 50 to 48.
So: what does the future hold? I suspect a lot of it will be determined right about a month from now during eh mid terms. If there is a “Blue Wave,” then we will doubtless see a whole lot more witch huntery, with accusations every bit as spurious as this time. The next time there’s an opening on the USSC… who would *want* to be nominated, knowing that the “politics of personal destruction” will be deployed in full force? Especially now that some are calling for violent revolution because mere unsubstantiated accusations did not automatically result in career termination?
If the elections result in a “Red Wave,” then I suspect we’ll see less of that sort of thing. But restoring reason and rationality to our culture will take a really long time, I suspect.
The impolitic thing for Kavanaugh to do will be to sue the bejeebers out of his accusers. I believe a good case can be made for slander and libel, but I’m dubious of his ability to win… and it would only enrage the people who believe that the likes of Tawana Brawley and Emma Sulkowicz and Crystal Gail Magnum and Jackie Coakley are 100% to be believed at all times with no doubting whatsoever allowed, and that the mere allegation is sufficient for conviction. But if this political circus results in legal action (which it may well), then *perhaps* things might settle back down. But I won’t bet on that happy occurrence: rage and irrationality and immaturity seem far too baked into modern political discourse.
The Democrats haven’t been this angry since the Republicans took their slaves away.
