Recordings of live TV from September 11, 2001.

These are – at least from the ones I’ve watched so far – the full recordings, commercials and all. I’ve not seen most of this… on that morning, I was in a van pool, listening to it on the radio.

This one is the ABC coverage:

The news breaks at 8:51 AM local time, about 20 minutes into the video. The second plane flies into the screen live at 9:02 AM, about 31:43 into the video.

It’s old news, but it’s useful to remember that… this is the world. As angry and sad as the events of that day made *us,* there were millions of people around the world who thought that this was a wonderful thing.

  1. You know, you see that stuff today, and you still can’t quite believe it’s all real.
It looks like really well-done special effects scenes from a movie, and the scale and the horror of it all escape you.
Your mind just doesn’t completely connect with what you are seeing, and the overall effect is that it’s not real, but some sort of scene from a bad dream you are having.
I imagine for the people who saw it on the spot, it must have been like having their whole world-view come apart at the seams.

    • > you still can’t quite believe it’s all real.

For me, 9/11 was a “radio day” not so much a “TV day.” The first reports of the first plane crash came in just as I was boarding the van; the first tower came down before the van got to the plant. I dashed into the cafeteria to grab breakfast chow and look at the TV… just in time to see the second tower come down. The rest of the day most “news,” such as it was, came in the form of radio reports, as there were only so many TV’s, and they were in meeting rooms, and work had to go on.

But what still gets me is the utter *chaos* and confusion on display. The ABC report has Peter Jennings or whoever describing a truck bomb outside the State Department in DC. In San Jose, the radio was reporting a truck bomb stopped on the Golden Gate Bridge, a truck bomb going off near a federal building in San Fran, and an oil tanker exploded and on fire in Discovery Bay. *None* of this actually happened. But the newsworld was full of such rumors… and at that point, nothing seemed unlikely.

  2. BTW, did you ever see the footage of Yasser Arafat in Gaza City after that?
They are jumping up and down and cheering; he’s wide-eyed, crying, and in a state of complete catatonic shock, wandering around like he’s blind and can’t see where’s he’s going, realizing what Bin Laden has just done to “help” the Palestinian cause.
It’s very sad to see, but it does teach you to be very careful about who you consider “friends” and where their ideas and tactics can end up at.
He probably had the one of the greatest personal epiphanies in human history at that moment.
“As you sow, so shall you reap; and if you sow the wind, you shall reap the whirlwind.”

    • > realizing what Bin Laden has just done to “help” the Palestinian cause.

You just *know* that Saddam Hussein must’ve spent most of the day going “ohshitohshitohshitohshitohshitohshitohshit…”

      • Yeah, you can see that coming also.
“Those fucking nuts just did WHAT?”
I’m the last few pages of the Koran, and although I’m going to get in so much trouble for writing this, but it is one of the most appalling things ever written by the hand of man.
Mohammad is the most disgusting, pathetic, cult leader in human history.
He’s not very bright, has an ego about the size of Jupiter, and set up the Islamic religion like Charles Manson set up his “Family”.
It’s extremely repetitive up to the moment he gets chased out of Mecca – then once he’s over at Medina and getting some political and military power, it’s one of the most bloodthirsty things you’ve ever read.
God talks to him via the archangel Gabriel, but you have no one but his word for that, and God’s orders and rules always seem to advance his personal desires in regards to who he can fuck and kill.
The sooner this religion is extinct from the face of the Earth, the better.
The only reason it went over in Medina is that they didn’t have a written language until he and Arabic showed up… and frankly, I suggest everyone at least makes a attempt to read the thing, so that they can experience the odd quadruple emotion of being bored out of their minds*, baffled, horrified, and laughing their ass off all at once.

        * BTW; if you actually can read the thing in its entirety, you certainly deserve a medal of some sort for patience in having done it…as well as a possible physiological exam for the underlying roots of your masochism in wanting to do it.

  3. The sad reality for me was losing 2 friends that day aboard AAL 77. One I had lunch with the day before he departed on his business trip. The horror of all those lives lost is in my mind and heart not just on 9/11, But everyday.NEVER FORGET!

  4. God bless the United States. I can’t believe it has been ten years since this tragedy.
