Curious about today’s terror attacks in Norway, I unleashed Google Translate on a Norwegian news article. Here is the linguistically unfortunate bit:
LONDON / Utøya (AP) Anders Behring Breivik (32) who has been arrested for the bomb in the city center, and mass killing of vermin, has lived in Oslo’s West End in his life, before he announced relocation of Hedmark for a month.
“Vermin?”
The article goes on to point out that the arrested suspect is vehemently anti-Islam and politically “conservative.” It’ll be interesting to see what he’s actually like. I can, in a theoretical sense, understand an anti-Islamic guy going buggo and car bombing a Mosque… but government buildings and a random summer camp? That seems kinda “Jared Loughner” crazy. And as always, beware of applying European political labels. They see Nazis, who want Big Collectivist Government, as “conservative” and “right wing.”
It may be that Breiviks “conservative” views extend little further than a dislike of Islam. As the assassinated, gay, former-commie, “social democrat” Pim Fortuyn of the Netherlands showed, apparently you can have all the normal hallmarks of being a leftie, but if you dislike Islam, that must mean you’re far Right. Crazy, but there it is.

The island camp site was hosting a youth meeting in support of the Labor government; he killed at least 80 people on the island and in the water as they tried to swim back to shore, the majority of them ages 15 to 25.

‘A Facebook page matching his name and the photo given out by the police was set up just a few days ago. It listed his religion as Christian, politics as conservative. It said he enjoys hunting, the video games World of Warcraft and Modern Warfare 2, and books including Machiavelli’s “The Prince” and George Orwell’s “1984.”
There was also a Twitter account apparently belonging to Mr. Breivik. It had one item, posted last Sunday: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests.” ‘

He posses the farming company Breivik Geofarm north of Olso, so tons of Fertilizer for the bomb.
next to that he is in Shooting association (aka Gun Club),
with registered Glock, a shotgun and a submachine gun.

Just about everybody. Pump everyone you know full of truth serum and ask ’em if there is *some* fashion trend or some such that sets their teeth on edge and makes violent thoughts come to mind, and I suspect the majority will be able to point to *something.* Goths, hippies, hipsters, urban cowboys, pants-on-the-ground, emos, yuppies… for every group, there’s someone who has a deep-seated disgust with it, and for every person, there is some deep-seated disgust.
Now, I realize that my built-in biases are going to be adjusted by the fact that I know that the guy in these photos not only looks like a douchebag, he actually is a Grade-A Evil Douchebag… but even without knowing that, his fashion-douchiness makes me immediately dislike him as I would some dork who tries to look like a heroin-chic fashion model. Or some sports fan painted half-orange and half-blue (or whatever his team colors are) and drunkenly mocking some kid dressed up like a Jedi or a Power Ranger.
In this case, I suspect we’d all agree that Norway would have been better off had Breivik been beaten to a pulp a few days back. Since he seems to have gone for the “pretty boy” look, perhaps a trip to the wrong parts of Oslo would have, in the end, done the world a bit of good:
