The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter recently took this shot of sunrise at the Tycho crater. Shown is the central impact mound, which is about 2 km tall.

Interesting…I recall reading an old book when I was young where an astronomer claimed to have spotted a light spot in the middle of a dark area on that peak. Back then (pre-moon landings) many thought that Tycho was volcanic in origin, so he ascribed it to a lava lake in the middle of a volcanic crater at the peak. He had no photos of the light spot, so over time his account was forgotten, but here, lo and behold, there is a bright spot in the middle of a depression at the peak, just as he described it!
that bright spot in the middle of a depression at the peak, is a 120 meter ø boulder
and confused the LRO geologists, they have no idea how that thing came up there.
