The quality is terrible, but apart from photos of a display model, this is the only illustration have of Northrop’s design for SLOMAR (Space LOgistics Maintenance And Rescue), a USAF program circa 1961 to study the sort of spacecraft that would be needed for crew and cargo transport to the space stations that everyone knew the USAF would have in some abundance by the end of the decade. The Northrop design is virtually identical in configuration to the Boeing Dyna Soar, though apparently a bit bigger.

With Samhain just passed, the notion of “costumes” is front and center. Yesterday in Logan the businesses had their “Halloween” thing going, where kids dressed in costumes went store to store getting free sugar, and I was reminded just how bugnets the state of Utah is for Halloween. Nowhere else I’ve lived devotes as much effort to it as Utah; of the multitude of kids I saw, not a one of ’em was in one of those cheapo vac-formed plastic masks, and at least half were in home-made costumes that clearly took some considerable effort.

Still, none of them approached the level of sheer awesomeness posed by some of the dinosaur costumes you see sometimes (mostly on YouTube). I showed one about a year ago; here, have some more:

Gotta do something about the bluejeans, though.

It would seem that much of the Arab world has a very different attitude towards women in public than the modern world does… namely, that a woman just going about her day may be freely harassed. And not “harassed” in the modern American sense of “he looked at me” or “he spoke to me,” but harassed as in “he followed me, grabbed me and things got worse from there.” See: Lara Logan.

However, even though Egypt has gone from bad to worse with the transition from dictatorship to Islamocracy, there appear to be a few in the country who would rather not see Egypt slide *entirely* into the lowest cesspits of human degradation.

Vigilantes Spray-Paint Sexual Harassers In Cairo

The young vigilantes wear yellow vests as they gather in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the focal point of last year’s revolution. They carry cans of spray paint, but none is a graffiti artist.

They are part of the new campaign called “Estargel!” or “Be a Man.” Emblazoned on the back of their vests are the words “Harassment Prevention.” The spray paint is used to tag grabby young men and send them on their way, marked as harassers. … “they gave themselves the right to molest the female, we gave ourselves the right to molest him — the molester.”

Superstorm Sandy: interactive before and after images

Aerial photos with a slider, so you can see direct overlays of before & after. Not the same sort of disaster that was seen after the tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan, not by a long shot, but still quite a mess. The second image is the most interesting… a barrier island got cut in half, and now it’s two islands. The lesson here might say something about building structures on sand next to the ocean.

First up:

Scientists induce temporary Tourette’s

German scientists use magnetic fields to make healthy human brains go all Tourettesy. Cool and scientifically useful, but I just wouldn’t want someone tinkering with my noggin like that.

And then there’s this:

Claim: ‘Hail Obama’ Chants at First Lady Rally

I’d wait for video/audio before really getting twitchy about this, but it just doesn’t seem all that unlikely.

An interesting video. The first 4 or so minutes give a really good summary of the last 4 years:

Perhaps more interesting than the video itself are the responses to the video. Remember a few years ago when the Dems were nagging us about toning down the vitriol in political rhetoric? Yeah, about that…

I admit that my social interactions skills are generally accepted to be a little off. So, correct me if I’m wrong:

A) Glamor shots of fashion model: good

B) Photo-documenting the damage caused by the recent Frankenstorm: good

C) Glamor shots of fashion model amidst the damage caused by the recent Frankenstorm: not so good
