This has been one of the less pleasant summers around here in rural Utah, and it’s only getting worse. Even on cloudless days, which are most of them, the sky is not blue, but a sort of muddy brownish gray with a bluish tint. At night, some stars are visible at the zenith, but they quickly fade to a dark haze as you look lower. And now the mountains are disappearing. The cause? The western US seems to have burst into flames, with the ecological paradise that is California being about the worst culprit along with Idaho and eastern Oregon:

Google Crisis Map

From the wind patterns, it looks like the smoke that has infested this area comes from the SoCal fires.

Worse than the visible effects is the ever-present smell of fire. More than once I’ve jumped out of bed thinking that my house was on fire.

So, who wants to guess: will this winter be warm and dry and pathetic, building on the trend starting last winter, or will it be a nightmarish snowpocalyptic Fimbulwinter with snow drifts that bury apartment buildings?

Wired has a good article about the “we’re dooooooomed” industry, and how they’ve gotten it so very wrong over the past few decades:

Apocalypse Not: Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Worry About End Times

It covers some of the new ones, along with some oldies but goldies that some of y’all may remember fondly, while some of you youngun’s might not remember at all.

Such as:

  • Paul Ehrlich’s 1968 claim that the 1970’s and 80’s would see massive die-offs in human population due to famine
  • Life magazines 1970 claim that by 85 city dwellers would need gas masks
  • The numerous early-80’s scares about acid rain wiping out the forests
  • The ozone hole… which continues to grow, but continues to not kill us all
  • Oprah Winfrey, 1987: “Research studies now project that one in five—listen to me, hard to believe—one in five heterosexuals could be dead from AIDS at the end of the next three years. That’s by 1990.” (This, by the way, is my favorite.)
  • We still seem to have oil and gas. More expensive, but reserves will last for decades to centuries.

And from the comments section of the article:

ElyasMa day ago

The present growth rate of apocalyptic predictions is unsustainable! At this rate, there will be so many apocalyptic predictions that by 2015 half of the world’s GDP will be expended promulgating and refuting various apocalyptic scenarios! People will be so breathless with anxiety that they will be fainting and dying in the streets! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!! Unless we can find a way to stop making apocalyptic predictions, IT WILL BE AN APOCALYPSE!!11!!1!!2!!!!

An Artificial Retina With the Capacity to Restore Normal Vision

It’s not quite what might be expected from the title. In short, the “neural codes” – basically the signals that the retina sends to the optic nerve – for a mouse and a monkey have been worked out. This would allow imagery from a video system to be transmitted to the brain. It’s not exactly a replacement for a screwed-up retina, although I imagine in less than a generation such will be possible.

The article actually suggests a Star Trek “Visor.”

So, 21-year-old Alexandra ‘Lexi’ De Forest, of Fort Collins, Colorado was hiking on Vedauwoo mountain in Wyoming Saturday when she snapped her ankle but good trying to jump across a sizable gap after sundown. Her hiking partner had to run off to find help, leaving Ms. De Forest alone… giving her time to make her own video diary of the event. It’s modestly awesome. Slightly NSFW language.

A youTube video purporting to show a Syrian drone manufacturing facility in Aleppo, captured by the rebels. The drones look fairly pathetic… basically model airplanes. They might have been meant for Hezbollah or some such for use against Israel.

Using Google translation on the YT page, we get this:

In the name of God the Merciful

Brigades are free Sham | | battalion Shahba | | Aleppo
====================
Review of the spoils and the contents of the research center in Aleppo, which was a stronghold in the city of Aleppo Cbihh and dominated by the brothers in the battalion of the buffy-Sham Brigades are free after violent clashes culminated in flight control center and tails Cbihh Assad. God is great and all praise and Glory to God.

Brothers in the media office for “Brigades are free Sham”

Which leads back to THIS.
