Reported to NASA in July, 1977, was a one-tenth-scale wind tunnel model of a twin-engined VTOL transport designed by Rockwell International. The engines appear to be Pegasus derivatives; instead of two vectorable nozzles on either side of the engine, these nacelles only had a single, noticably larger, nozzle on either side.

While the aircraft is described only as a “transport,” it was very likely designed for the US Navy’s “Type A” V/STOL contest to develop a subsonic ASW plane, from about 1977.

I’m looking directly at YOU, Anders Fogh Rasmussen

From The Independent:

When Elif’s father told her she had to kill herself in order to spare him from a prison sentence for her murder, she considered it long and hard. “I loved my father so much, I was ready to commit suicide for him even though I hadn’t done anything wrong,” the 18-year-old said. “But I just couldn’t go through with it. I love life too much.”

All Elif had done was simply decline the offer of an arranged marriage with an older man, telling her parents she wanted to continue her education. That act of disobedience was seen as bringing dishonour on her whole family – a crime punishable by death. ….

So-called “honour killings” in Turkey have reached record levels. According to government figures, there are more than 200 a year – half of all the murders committed in the country. Now, in a sinister twist, comes the emergence of “honour suicides”. The growing phenomenon has been linked to reforms to Turkey’s penal code in 2005. That introduced mandatory life sentences for honour killers, whereas in the past, killers could receive a reduced sentence claiming provocation. Soon after the law was passed, the numbers of female suicides started to rocket.

Let me type this real slow, so that even the most touchy-feely can understand it: Not All Cultures Are Equivalent. Cultures that promotethe murder of women, or promote the suicide of women, are not as good as cultures that discourage the murder and suicide of women.

“Honor Killings” are the result of cultures that do not understand, much less embrace, the concept of “honor.”

Tak is fantastically skilled at shutting her eyes jsut as the flash goes off. In short… I’ve *never* taken a shot of her with her eyes open with a flash. There must be some precursor – either sound or light – that she recognizes. But without a flash, her eyes stay open just fine.

Wow. Fifty whole thousand dollars.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the earthquake. Our embassy in Rome will provide 50,000 (dollars) in emergency relief funding,” State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters.

Maybe the White House can throw in some DVDs and an ipod or two. Ooh, I know… pre-load the ipod with “The Godfather” and some “Sopranos” episodes. That’ll go over great.

Anyone who has worked with classified information has seen special cover sheets for them. They vary from company to company; each company has their own standards. The one reproduced below comes from a Bell document from the mid 1950’s (declassified via FOIA, and scanned as you see it here… meh). The original document was probably very colorful… the ones I’ve seen usually have white backgrounds with bright red lettering, or red backgrounds with black lettering. These days, perhaps not terribly eye-catching, but in the days when all a document was likely to have was typed pages, a bright red cover would be noticable. Which was the point: some dumbass leaves it just sitting on his desk, someone else would leap on it and run to management/security and get said dumbasses ass in serious trouble.

In a better world with better people, the person who finds it might actually tell the dumbass who left it out, and perhaps give him a good talking to, thus perhaps saving the dumbasses job.  But let’s face it… we’re in a back-stabby world.
