Wow. Fifty whole thousand dollars.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed in the earthquake. Our embassy in Rome will provide 50,000 (dollars) in emergency relief funding,” State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters.
Maybe the White House can throw in some DVDs and an ipod or two. Ooh, I know… pre-load the ipod with “The Godfather” and some “Sopranos” episodes. That’ll go over great.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Yep, and I remember how the press lashed at Mr. Bush when he pledged 15 millions $ for immediate relief to the 2005 tsunami victims. From far away I can say that Mr. Obama will go down the tube veeeery quickly. Now it’s up to American voters in 18 months.

Well, in November 2010 there will be the next round of elections for the House of Representatives. But Obama isn’t up until November 2012. Unless he gets frogmarched out, or somehow the US gets a recall election (which has never happened and I doubt even *could* happen), we’re pretty much stuck with him until at least January 2013.
He can do a lot of damage between now and then. Look what he’s managed to pull off just since January.
Yep, but with an “adverse” Congress the damage could be limited….
There should be some terminations at the Department of State. $50,000 is such an insult. We would have been better off if we just expressed our condolescences to the victims of the earthquake and their families.

Indeed. Italy is a first-world nation (though from personal experience I gotta question that status with regards to their postal system), so they probably don’t *need* US dollars to help them through this. A “we feel your pain” and an offer to provide any requested assistance (and a willingness to follow through) would *probably* have been quite sufficient. But as with the DVDs and the iPod, this just reeks of cheap. It’s like tipping your waitress one penny.
