So here I was, minding my own business when several of my cats started acting glitchy. This is not unknown… where some dogs will bark their damnfool heads off if they hear a stranger on their turf, my cats warn me of visitors or trespassers in their own quieter way. In this case it was a UPS truck and the driver bringing a box to my door. As I hadn’t ordered anything recently, this was a puzzlement.

As it turns out, it was a copy of Dennis Jenkins three-volume book “Space Shuttle: Developing an Icon 1972-2013.” This is the latest, and presumably last, edition of the premiere tome on the history of the Space Shuttle. It is vastly expanded from the previous editions, now over 1,500 pages.

In short… if’n you’re at all interested in the Space Shuttle, procure yourself a copy of this book. It’s a billet of hardback paper massive enough to brain an ape, filled with full-color art & photos, diagrams and data galore. The first volume describes the early history of the Shuttle from World War II up through the 70’s; the second volume is a detailed technical description of the Space Transportation System. The third volume describes the operational history of the Shuttle program.

If you like projects/unbuilt designs, the first volume in particular provides an embarrassment of riches.

In short, I wholeheartedly endorse this book. It’s friggen’ awesome.

With every purchase of “Space Shuttle,” you’ll receive one free Raedthinn-approved Fort Of Imagination.

Note: seems my copy came to me due to my having contributed very, very slightly to it, another concept I wholeheartedly approve of. Thus, thanks to Dennis Jenkins for providing me with this!

Because why not, here’s a link to a complete PDF scan of the “Vistas of Science” book from 1961, “Spacecraft.” Nothing too exciting… a book meant for kids. But it was a book meant to explain spacecraft to kids in a era when the future looked particularly bright for spacecraft.

Cynicism alert: one might be tempted to wonder why this has remained available on the NASA technical report server. Shouldn’t it have been removed as an ITAR risk?

From UFOs to its psychic Stargate tests, the CIA just dumped 13 million declassified pages online

They are available at the CIAs online reading room. Forget the rubbish about psychics and aliens… I’m’a be lookin’ up keywords such as “suntan” and “gusto” and “skunk works.” Find anything good, post a link in the comments.

Aged pharmaceuticals floor model Bob Dylan was, rather oddly, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature today. Eh, whatever… it’s not like it’s one of the good Nobel Prizes like Physics or Chemistry. Like the “Peace” prize, it’s an exercise in… well, let’s let this tweet from the author of “Trainspotting” finish the thought:

Other authors weighed in:

Heh.

Personally, I can’t say as I’m bothered at all. Look at the list of Nobel Prize/Literature laureates. Who *don’t* you see? Heinlein. Asimov. Leinster. Clarke. Niven. Pournelle. Smith (L. Neill). Brin. Robinson. Steele. Basically, *all* of science fiction. If your prize for literature ignores the most important genre of literature, obviously your prize is of little real importance… so awarding it to Bob “Mumbles” Dylan hardly cheapens it any.

Out today is a kinda spendy but awesome-looking two-volume set of Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork for the Star Wars franchise. Something like 2,000 illustrations are included. From the glimpse at the art you can see here, it looks like a heck of a thing. The list price is $250, but Amazon has it for $182 currently. It’s a “limited edition,” which may or may not mean that a cheaper paperback version might be released at some point. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

A collected edition of the extended versions of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit on Blu-Ray certainly sounds like a reasonable idea. This October, just such a collection will be released. Some of the official description:

– The Limited Collector’s Edition includes 30 discs featuring all six Middle-earth films in their extended edition forms, housed in six stunning faux leather books and a collectible Hobbit-style wood shelf. The one-of-a-kind wood shelf is crafted from solid wood with design selected by Peter Jackson.
– In addition to the extended edition release of every film, the collection also includes all previously released bonus content from both the theatrical and extended editions.
– Exclusive premiums designed for the collection include: · Spectacular 100-page sketch-style book with replica The Red Book of Westmarch, filled with original film sketches and new artwork · Original reproductions of exquisite watercolor paintings by acclaimed conceptual artists Alan Lee and John Howe, framable and wall-ready

So… as far as the actual movies and extras, it’s nothing new, same stuff as already released. But it comes with some kinda spiffy physical extras. So that’s cool. But there is one minor problem:

Ummm. How about no.

Apparently Peter Jackson wanted to create a bunch of new documentaries for this collected edition, but the studio shot that idea down. If you can explain why this is actually worth $800, congrats… you’re doing better than me.

Here is Part Five of the story of Sarah, Zane, Loff and George transporting a shipload of rich folk to Gimli, a place where regular folk just don’t get to go. This, at long last, is the conclusion to the story (it’s been done for a couple months, but I’ve been a bit busy of late).

If you want to catch up in advance, Part One is available HERE, Part Two is available HERE, Part Three is available HERE, Part Four is HERE, and the previous story, “Mass Disappearance,” is available HERE. A couple story fragments starring this crew are available HERE and HERE.

If you like it, feel free to tell your friends, family, co-workers, random strangers, whoever. Like it, hate it or meh it, I’m interested in your thoughts via comments. In particular: do you read it in EPUB pr PDF??

“Going to Gimli Part 5,” PDF version

“Going to Gimli Part 5,” EPUB version

Also available is “Going to Gimli” in a complete edition. As a bonus, this version includes not only the worst cover art you’ve seen outside of… well, a whole lot of other self-published books, but also a technical diagram and a portion of the Zaneverse “bible” that describes the basics of artificial intelligences. Finally understand what the terminology means! This complete edition is available with the EPUB and 74-page PDF versions bundled together.
Download “Going to Gimli” for $3.
