Made for the Gemini and Apollo capsules, and sold to the public in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Pretty much a machete. Why would astronauts need a machete? Well… just because the capsules were supposed to land in the ocean under the watchful eye of the US Navy doesn’t mean that that’s where they necessarily would land.

  8. Hi!

Soviet cosmonauts in 1970 have had some kind of machete in their survival kits.
Perhaps it’s inclusion has inspired by this knife?
Remember, some landings of cosmonuts have been in quite inhabitant places, like “Voskhod-2” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voskhod_2
So the space flyers could suffer very hard condition after succesfull reurning from orbit.

P.S. Thanks for the nice blog.

  9. > Where on earth are ya now?

If there’s a bright center to the world where aerospace engineers/historians are held in high regard, showered with cash and have hot women throw themselves at them, I’m in the city that’s it’s farthest from.

I’m *always* in that city, seemingly.

  10. I’ve seen that ax-machete thing that Silencerr mentioned, I think its also carried in military pilot’s rescue gear.
