This is what one model builder did with the 1/72 scale  SA-43 “Hammerhead” kit that I mastered for Fantastic Plastic:

  1. Really nice! What kind of mods did the builder make? Would it be possible to make a detail kit using those mods?

  2. This is my model. Here’s what was enhanced:

    1) Scribed new panel lines (about 90% accurate)
    2) Cut away the “glass” portion of the canopy and replaced it with thinner clear acetate
    3) Sculpted a new pilot figure with accurate helmet for Col. McQueen
    4) The missile pylons and gun turrets are removeable and poseable with 1/8″ dia. magnets
    5) Extra decals made in Photoshop and ink let printer for the cockpit and exterior
    6) Added navigation lights and cockpit hologram projector and scratchbuilt cockpit

The Hammerhead was painted in Model Master Acryl Light Ghost Grey, and the decals reflect the ship Col. McQueen fought Chiggy-Von-Richoften in the episode “The Angriest Angel”.

  3. That is awesome. Kudos to the designer and the modeler!

    • Oh, and by designer I meant you Scott, so I should’ve said masterer I guess? Anyway, nice work all around.

  4. Congratulations to the mold master and model builder. Looks great.

One quip though. The panels of buttons on the “shelfs” to the sides of the pilot extend far to far back for the pilot to reach.

I can’t remember if it was this way on the show?

    • It does extend quite far back although the choice of colors (red/blue buttons) was artistic intrerpertation on my part. And many aircraft have panels and circuit breakers that extend past the seat. Those are the ones rarely used. 🙂 The only ship I know of in sci-fi that has armrests along the length of the cockpit walls is the movie version (DYRL) of the Macross Valkyries.

      • I remember DYRL, and loved the Valkyries.

As to those side shelves you’ld think they’d have the mechanism to hold the canopy down – but SF set designers don’t like to bother with things like that.

        😉

  5. Great model! Another decent Sci-Fi show that was killed in the crib.

  6. 3 or 4 view in case someone wants to build a flying model?

  7. I got to talk to Bobby at Wonderfest and see this model in person. It’s a gorgeous build.

  8. Giday! Don’t know if you will get this or not but I just picked one of these up and wanted to ask a few questions about yours? You did such am awesome job it’s incredible!
