Iran may be run by theocratic jackholes, but the people seem to be largely OK. There seems to be a thriving amateur astronomy community there. And since their part of the world is pretty well undeveloped, they have a good view of their night sky.

And thus, we get this:

  1. I’ve met a few Iranians. One Iranian Jew (her family left at the end of the Iran-Iraq war; she is a US citizen now), and one Iranian from a Muslim family who lived there for several years as a pre-teen. Khomeni made all sorts of guarantees about keeping up women’s rights and political freedoms before the Islamic revolution, which fooled a lot of Iranians. And the population as a whole is very bright and very pro-American. It would be really nice if the Green movement succeeded at overthrowing the theocracy.

P.S. Don’t ever call them Arabs. They are Persian. They *hate* it when they are confused with Arabs.

It’s amazing to think that Babylon (Iraq) and Persia (Iran) Have been consistently hating each other for over 3,000 years.
I’m around half-way through reading the Koran at the moment, and boy is that a trip.
I’ve never read anything more repetitive in my entire life, and that poor hamstrung female camel is still showing up over-and-over again.
Apparently, Allah sent it as a miraculous sign, but the people who got it thought it wasn’t much by miracle standards compared to, say, the parting of the Red Sea, and whacked the poor thing’s ass.
Then Allah popped a cap on all of them.
He may be “compassionate and merciful”, but you croak His camel and you’re dead meat.

You think that’s bad… read the Old Testament. Start with numbers 16, where we find out what Jehovah thinks about people who want democracy. Hint: it involves earthquakes, crevices swallowing people, children being buried alive and plagues that kill 14,000. Basically, that scene near the end of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” where the Nazis melt, implode or explode… but with children, or people who just happened to be in the blast radius.

I tried a couple times to read the Koran, but just couldn;t maintain interest past the first few pages. I recall them being chock full of threats, which really isn’t the way to grab me as a reader.

  2. That is a hell of a photo; made me think of “Now we enter the realm of the red Kryptonian sun, source of your strength…”
