So where was I today?

First I was inside this:

Then I saw this outside:

And a little later and a little down the road, this:

So… anyone know where the first photo was taken?

An aside: if you’ve been debating on whether or not to buy those dozens of downloads or hit the “donate” button and dispense with your tax refund, now would be a good time. On the road, far from home is a bad time to check your bank account by phone and discover that the automatic withdrawls that are coming in a few days are going to be greater than the sum total in your account…

UPDATE:

This aughtta help…

FURTHER UPDATE: This was below decks on the USS North Carolina (more photos HERE). The photo at the top of the post shows the underside of the turret support structure from inside the ship, below the turret. The bottom photo shows cannisters of gun propellant ready for loading.

  1. Down at the Cape?

  2. Kennedy Space Center? I think I recognize the alligator.

  3. I want to say Mobile or Pensacola. But if you are still at or heading toward KSC, PM me and we can get together.

  4. Nope. Not getting to Florida this time out, though I’d love to get back to Cape Canaveral with a decent camera (last time I was there I had a crappy P&C… and NASA wouldn’t let me take even that into the VAB. Bah!).

However, a further hint: for anyone wanting to make a movie featuring an Orion out blasting the aliens… a tour through this place would seem to be in order.

  5. Based on your post, I’d have to guess Michoud.

Do tell what the first photo is.

  6. Yeah, definitely Michoud. Shoulda thought of that earlier.

  7. Would the top photo be of something that is used inside of Shuttle ETs to manufacture them?

  8. Nope, not Michoud. Another hint: not even remotely spaceflight-capable. Unless, of course, you think that Japanese animation is some kinda prescient documentary of the future…

  9. Some sort of battleship (Iowa class)?

  10. Texas battleship?

  11. The powder bag made me think of a battleship. Since my mind was originally on Michoud, I thought the USS Alabama (in Mobile Bay), but none of my photos of the Alabama look like your extra photo.

Since a later blog post refers to Virginia Beach, I’d guess the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk (although I didn’t think they got gators/crocs up there …).

  12. It wouldn’t be the USS Drum (submarine) in Mobile Bay would it?

  13. […] April 23, I toured the USS North Carolina (BB-55), a battleship moored at the port of Wilmington, North […]
