What Are These?

Again, I expect that for 99+% of the planetary population, these are complete mysteries, and would remain so even if explained. But I also expect that for some Unwanted Blog readers, these are blindingly obvious.

    Yes. And as of yesterday (when I made some discoveries while researching in a little-known archive when some would have suggested my time would have been better spent wandering the wonders of Manhattan), I have enough to put together a pretty snazzy and sizable and wonderfully illustrated book on the subject. Since it had been my plan to put together a *small* but illustrated book, this could be interesting.
