The 747-8 has had its first flight. This is the biggest and most advanced 747 to date, borrowing some lessons learned from the 787. Go to the link to see some photos… it’s surprisingly colorful.

EDIT: here’s the best 3-view of the 747-8 I’ve got.

  1. She’s beautiful. I’ve always admired the design and engineering ingenuity of the 747.

  2. Admin,

Have you found any blueprints or tech information on any of your searches or expeditions?

  3. nice airplane

    there one thing i wonder
why not extend the upper decks to tail unit
or is this not possible do fuselage configuration ?

  4. The livery on the 787 kinda reminds me of the Dash 80.

  5. The scalloped aft ends on the turbofan nacelles are odd…noise reduction of some sort?: http://www.wired.com/autopia/wp-content/gallery/boeing-747-8/boeing7478i08.jpg
Boeing sure made a wise investment when they decided to make that aircraft; it’s one of the greatest aircraft of all times, hands-down.

  6. Boeing made a wise investment when the built the 737, not the 747.
It was a wild ass bet ($1) that bankrupted PanAm eventually.
The same basic thing happened with the L1011, except engine problems
    killed Lockheed.

    Lucky, sure, wise, probably not.

That being said, as a kid I spent a lot of time on those aircraft.
Pre-flighted one, simmed a landing, worked at Boeing during the 400 rollout etc. Gotta love it. (sonic cruiser my ass, mach 0.93! )

  7. Admin,

    Thanks for the 3-view drawing.

  8. Pat – You got it; they work to mix the layer of air from around the nacelle and the air exhausted from the fan. That it happens to look sharp is coincidental, but convenient just the same!
