OK, this seems kinda pointless… I have difficulty imagining why you’d read this on my little piddly blog and NOT be aware of the larger world of news. But if you are in Hawaii – or pretty much anywhere else on the Pacific Rim… head for the hills.

TSUNAMI WARNING FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII BASED ON AN 8.9 M EARTHQUAKE OFF HONSHU JAPAN.  EST. 1ST WAVE ARRIVAL IS 3:07 AM.

The quake in Japan has led to some video that when I saw it on the TV I couldn’t tell *what* the hell I was watching. As it turned out, it was live helicopter footage of a tsunami rolling in. Holy crap.

Astonishing footage, with dumbass fratboy commentary:

And here’s a half hour of video, with Hindi language commentary and a *lot* of annoying graphics and text.

I gotta imagine that the death toll here is going to be impressive.

As for the cause of the earthquake…

  1. wouldn’t want to be on one of those high speed rail trains when this one hit.

  2. When do they start blaming Bush?

  3. Scott,
You map showed me that the waves should hit my parents Washington coast beach place at a bout 7:30 their time. I Called just to make sure they were at home.
They REALLY wanted to drive down to see it, but were to busy. I guess someone set up cameras but it wasn’t expected to be more than about 6 feet max.

    Thanks,
    Gar.

  4. A six foot wave, while not the ten meter wave that hit parts of Japan, is not to be sneezed at.

*Especially* if you’re dealing with dumbasses on the beach whose response to the very first sign of a tsunami is… “Hey, where’d the water go? Let’s go pick up some fish!”
