    I actually saw that effect while flying in a Il-62 back from Moscow to NYC via Gander, Newfoundland over the North Atlantic back in early January of 1978.
    It’s impressive, but can’t hold a candle to a fully developed winter “Sun Dog” up here in North Dakota… that can cover 1/4 of the whole sky, and even the side lobes of it can be so bright that they can’t be looked at easily.
