oh my god ! those City are run by Democrats ! :-O
Don’t include CANTON, OHIO on your list of bashing Democrats!
I can see what you are trying to get at with the Political party reference, but what you should do if you really care about facts is to look at who was in charge of these cities during the research from this report. As well as who was in charge of the Governor’s office – that has direct influence on the success and failures of our cities. The report used data from 2001 to 2005.
In Canton, Ohio – Republicans held the Mayor’s office during that period. In fact, Republicans held the Mayor’s office for 20 strait years untill this year, when I took office in January.
The declin of our city happened over 20 years of Republican control, along with 16 consecutive years of Republicans in our Governor’s office. Which also explains why so many Ohio Cities made the list.
Watch this information for the next five to ten years and see where my city is rated then. I can guarantee you that we will no longer be on anyone’s “dying city” list from data used from 2008 and on, because Democrats have taken back the Governor’s office (Ted Strickland last year) and our city’s Mayor’s office – as of this year.
Get your facts strait before you include my city on your political spin garbage.
William J. Healy II
Mayor of Canton, Ohio
I look forward to seeing how you turn things around. I can only assume that you are doing your best to reduce taxes on businesses and changing the culture of welfare & entitlement that seems to dominate in Cities That Suck. As yours is a manufacturing town that has seen a decline in manufacturing, may I suggest that you make a concerted effort to become the new center of industrial-scale manufacturing of latest-generation nuclear breeder reactors?
I’m also gratified to see that you were already a reader of my little blog. Because, of course, as a politician you wouldn’t be constantly scanning the Web for references to your own name. That would be just silly.
I’d rather hear the Mayor’s thoughts on the Dyna Soar’s pressure suit ergonomics!
This is a fascinating blog in more ways than I’d thought…

I was just gratified beyond the capacity for rational thought to read that the mayor has done such a bang-up job on returning industry to a factory town that he has the time to search for and respond to pissant little blogs like mine. I must say that I am impressed. Normally I would have expected that reversing long-term trends – such as the de-industrialization of the Rust Belt as heavy steel industry and the like have migrated overseas – would be a job requiring massive overhauls of local social orders, with considerable lengths of time required; but clearly His Right Honorable Majestic Royal Mayor has pulled off a major miracle in record time. Perhaps for his next trick he can figure out how to eliminate the welfare state in the US as a whole.
