A slightly later, slightly less colorful illustration of the VAB than This One.
A bit more newspaper-friendly, though, I suppose.

How did the Russians do this? Did they have a remote assembly building, or did they stack the parts and pieces on the pad?
As for what I have seen,they put it together horizontally on a rail car at a remote site and then
bring it to the launch site and then prop it vertically on the pad.
