Tonight the phone rang; when I picked it up there was silence. I said “hello” a few times then hung up, and went about my life (such as it is). A bit later I looked at the caller ID thing (on another phone) and the caller was listed as PHONE SCAM. An odd name to go under. So I looked up “phone scam” and 567 (the area code) and lo and behold, I found multiple references to this exact phone number. Such as here:

Seems to be an enthusiastic but almost wholly incompetant credit card phishing operation. Huh.

  1. Report them to this instrumentality of the US Government: https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx?panel=2
(I’ve been nuts for the word “instrumentality” ever since “Forbidden Planet”.)
At the least they may get a complaint, assuming you are signed up; at the most, assuming Obama actually gets around to enforcing the law, which Dubya somehow never did, they may owe you several thousand dollars.

  2. My best Instrumentality reference is in Cordwainer Smith’s writings. I actually approve of these guys, let’s keep the criminals stupid.

Of course you rarely hear about the really smart ones…
