Parents of Michigan school shooting suspect held on $500,000 bond each after manhunt
These parents seem like real winners. But none of the reports I’ve seen have said what crime they actually are thought to have committed. Yes, their offspring murdered people, but being the parents of a murderer has up till now not generally been considered a crime. Yes, they bought him a gun… but far as I can tell, they purchased it legally, and gave it to him legally. He was not a felon at the time.
Making parents legally liable for the crimes of their minor children is a debate worth having. If this is accepted, there will be a lot of prisons receiving an influx of single mothers. Perhaps Constitutionally dubious, but almost certainly a net benefit for society, especially if the absent fathers can be tracked down and also charged. *Imagine* the effect on society if single mothers and absent fathers are held equally to account for the crimes of their kids. In order for justice to be served, this would have to exempt fathers who have been denied custody or visitation, but would include fathers who skipped town or refused responsibility.
UPDATE:
Get a load of this:
Michigan shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley’s parents plead not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges
The couple each face four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection to Tuesday’s tragedy at Oxford High School for refusing to take their son out of school after staff said he exhibited warning signs of violence and needed counseling, according to authorities.
Huh. If the school felt he was a threat… why didn’t they boot his ass out?
