Past month or two a new cat has been hanging around the back porch. It’s not a mooch like the others… at least, he takes off like a shot when I open the door, where the other cats go bonkers and damn near riot in expectation of getting food. He’s a sizable fluffy cat… the others are all shorthair cats. Seems healthy except for a bite taken out of one ear.

Really pretty fur coloration on it, isn’t it?
He looks like Charles Bronson. 🙂
Glad to know we are NOT the only people who have this happen to them! Is a nice looking cat, have you managed to see which sex it is yet?
I’m not sure, but this cat may be fixed. Some people catch, have fixed and release ferals. When they do this, a notch is taken out of the ear. It is a great way of controlling the feral cat population in an area.

Nope. These photos, taken with maximum zoom on the regular lens, are the closest I’ve yet managed to get to this beast.
The other cats are perfectly comfortable with this one, so it must be well-behaved (in feline terms)
It looks like it knows you, maybe it’s a kitty reincarnate
To me it looks like it wants to be let into the house.

Well, maybe. But whenever I touch the door, he/she takes off like a shot. On those few occasions when I could crack the door open a couple inches and not have him/her disappear, and tossed food out, the others all went into a feeding frenzy, but he/she doesn’t seem to recognize it.
I suspect if I opened the door and made myself scarce, he/she might come in. But that ain’t gonna happen.
Tim? You may be right, here in PA that is done by a couple of groups, in lieu of simply killing them. And that notch does appear faily regular in shape, instead of looking like a naturally occurring heal from injury. That would also explain the excessive skittishness of humans.
He or she looks like a lovely Maine Coon Cat. My daughter has one of those, and he’s just the sweetest, most laid-back fellow.

Could be. While his/her build is largely hidden by fluff, I get the impression of a fairly solidly built cat. And he’s got the Maine Coon “M” on his forehead.
