Have to comment; having had a ‘house’ full of kittens before I both sympathize and envy those that get to share the joy of raising the little snots!
In our case the ‘mommy’ (barely a kitten herself we’d gotten from a shelter) had an even dozen despite some rather rough times with a neighborhood dog who chased and tormented her when he managed to get out. (Including chasing her UP a 100′ tall tree, though she ‘stopped’ at an old ‘knothole/branchcut’ about 30′ up. (She was VERY pregnant at the timed :o) I retrieved her but we just KNEW she was going to lose some kittens over the incident.
The Vet said she looked fine but the stress would probably effect her pregnancy somewhat, (stess? what stress? she was perfectly calm as I came up even with on the ladder and before I could do anything she simply walked onto my head and settled back down for the ride… her claws in my scalp for a seat-belt :o) but the only “effect” seemed to be a delay in her having the kittens.
My wife and I were SO happy for her when we realized she’d finally had them we attempted to trace the “squeeking” of the kittens down and see how she and they were doing. Despite our ‘house’ had exactly two ‘rooms’ with the living room/kitchen in front and the ‘bedroom-everything-else’ room in back and a ‘built-in’ bathroom in place of the closet, after a two hour search we couldn’t FIND the damn things!
Giving up and going to bed (a twin which pretty much filled the room along with the single dresser :o) we settled down only to be awakened at 2am when I found a blind kitten trying to stuff himself up my nose :o)
Then “mommy” cat jumped up on the end of the bed, (she’d had them directly UNDER the head of the bed but we would never have known that because you couldn’t actually MOVE the bed because of the size of the room :o) with another kitten in her mouth and placed it lovingly and gently next to the one already sleeping on my wifes chest. I shook her awake as mom turned around to get another and in total we were presented with 12 healthy and happy kittens while mom preened and glowed under our rather sleepy praise. We then set her up a box under the foot of the bed which she transfered the kittens into, I then crawled UNDER the damn bed with a flashlight in my teeth expecting to have to clean up at least one or more “still-borns” but there were none!
My ‘nasel’ explorer turned out to be the most energetic of the bunch, roaming far and wide even with his eyes still closed and scaring mom half to death with the places he was wandering blind into :o)
Look at it… the way it’s sleeping!
It’s Son Of Raedthinn!
Now we know why he sleeps all day.
The old devil has been busy by night in the neighborhood, and this is the result. 🙂
They always choose the most oddball and inaccesable places to have their kittens.
I assume this is instinct, based on the idea of hiding them from predators.
