“Antlers” is a Guillermo del Toro produced horror movie set in Oregon featuring a Wendigo causing a ruckus. A good basis for a horror flick, but the Wendigo is from Algonquin mythology… east coast of Canada rather than west coast. Kinda like having leprechauns in Albania, I suppose. The Wendigo was a creature of the cold, driven by greed and a need to consume human flesh; humans could become Wendigos by either being in close contact with them, being too greedy or resorting to cannibalism. This is the sort of supernatural monster that very likely has a real-world basis, either in the form of psychopaths who have some compulsion to eat people, or schmoes who, like the Donner party, felt forced to eat people to survive. Consequently, this is a monster movie that could be supernatural, or simply feature regular humans who are plain buggo and wear wacky costumes and do horrible things. Except the very last little bit of the trailer seems to show something…
I always assumed the “Wendol” from Michael Crichtons “Eaters of the Dead” (movie version: “The 13th Warrior”) were based in part on the Wendigo
