After a long, tiring, hot and expensive day, when I was nearly home I stopped and took some photos including this one of a nearby agricultural aquaduct.

  1. Nice photo; I’ve seen that place up around here.
It looks like something out of The Shire from the romantic point of view.
What the romantic point of view fails to mention is the smell of it, and the number of flies and other biting insects in the vicinity.

  2. Smell wasn;t really an issue here. Nor is it generally around here, even though this is farm country. There are, however, two definite exceptions to that rule:

    1) The neighbor raises sheep. Lots of sheep. Generally… nota problem. But every now and then….

    2) In the summer months, the local skunk population becomes suicidal en masse, and targets cars. Yeeesh.

As for biting insects… we get skeeters (and regular anti-skeeter spraying from both trucks and planes), and that’s about it.

  3. You know… there’s so many loons over at sci.space.history, and no one is actually moderating sci.space.moderated… even though we violently disagree politically, do you want me to suggest that the “Old Gang” from sci.space.history who are actually interested in historic space/aviation projects ditch .history and head over here?
God knows there’s little enough left there to be interested in, and if we all kept it based on technology rather than politics, it actually might work.
I already mentioned the wild cat pictures on a posting to .history… this is downright weird: http://up-ship.com/blog/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/img_9359a.jpg
That’s H. P. Lovecraft territory if I ever saw it. It must be around 8 feet tall…. and it dresses like a Puritan minister….”Purritan” minister?
But I need a name for the story…”The Claws Of Time”?
Well, that’s not perfect, but it’s a beginning.

  4. “there’s so many loons over at sci.space.history…”

    An inevitability for Usenet, sadly.

“do you want me to suggest that the “Old Gang” from sci.space.history who are actually interested in historic space/aviation projects ditch .history and head over here?”

    Couldn’t hurt…

“That’s H. P. Lovecraft territory if I ever saw it.”

  5. Oh, I wish they had those “Babylon 5” cats from Finland still up on the web.
Cats with Centauri hairstyles on them was one of the oddest things imaginable.
I’ll see what I can do in regards to the “old boys” at sci.space.history, but you must remember that my currency had a lot more kick before I did the “Chaff Reentry” posting in regards to Columbia falling apart over Texas and leaving the big smear on the weather radar that OM’s got on his website.
Being right in regards to common-sense prophecy is one thing; rubbing people’s nose in it is quite another from the popularity point of view.
    Ego meets tragedy.
    Who shall win?
    In my case, ego.
