From azcentral.com:
Elderly Holocaust survivors were reunited at a London railway station Friday with the man who saved them on the eve of World War II – a now 100-year-old former stockbroker who rescued hundreds of Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.
…
It is estimated there are 5,000 people around the world who owe their lives to Winton – the children he saved and their descendants.

And this from the Wiki entry:
Winton kept his humanitarian exploits under wraps for many years until his wife Greta found a detailed scrapbook in the attic in 1988. The scrapbook contained lists of the children, including their parents’ names, and the names and addresses of the families that took them in. After sending letters to these addresses, 80 of “Winton’s children” were found in Britain. The world found out about Winton’s work in 1988 on a television programme titled That’s Life when Winton was invited to be an audience member. At one point during the programme Winton’s scrap book was shown, and his achievements explained. The host of the programme then asked if there was anyone in the audience who owed their lives to Mr. Winton and if so to please stand – at which point over 2 dozen audience members surrounding Winton rose and applauded.
Here is that moment on YouTube.
Now, if you can read all this and watch that 1:39-long clip and not get a little something in your eye, then you are very likely a coldhearted bastard who kicks puppies and voted for Obama.

That was a handful of men and women. The rest just played sheep and screamed “Heil!” Pretty much like today, where people play sheep and scream “Hope!” and “Change!”
I know the story of a woman here in Vienna who hid a Jew in the hut in her garden, throughout the entire war. How she managed to face that risk every day is just amazing. How she managed to feed that Jew, with the supplies dwindling eventually.
Yep, there were a couple of brave men and women. Sadly, there were too little of them.

I’ll point out that Mr Winton comes from our pretty socialist United Kingdom, and so might have a more favourable view of Obama than you do Scott.

Relevance? I can recognize one man who has done great things, while recognizing another man who is doing terrible things. Winton, in one of the vids I saw, called himself a “lefty,” and obviously *he* opposed Hitler, who was also a “lefty.”
Really? Hitler was a “lefty”?
Hitler who was supported by German Industrialists?
Hitler who banned Trade Unions?
Hitler who sent Jews, Gypsies, and Communists to his extermination camps?
Pull the other one.
> Really? Hitler was a “lefty”?
Hitler was a Fascist. Fascism is on the lefthad side of the scale. The Right is about minimum government; the Left is about maximum government.
Hitlers government dominated the German Industrialists. They may have originally supported Hitler, but they came to regret it. Much like GM.
Hitlers government was a vast “do everything for everyone” totalitarian state. The trade unions may have been banned, but the government took their place.
Hitlers government practiced “affirmative action” on a vast scale.
The reason why Fascism has been declared Right wing was because *Stalin* declared it so back in the 30’s. But to Stalin, damn near everything was Right wing.
If you want to prevent Fascism, you need to strictly limit the power and scope and size of governemnt. And having a small government that cannot meddle in everything… that’s not very Leftist.
Oh, the Nazis replaced the Trade Unions? So, did they have panels for grievances, did they organize strikes?
Whilst I could accept fascism being placed ‘neither right not left’, because of the collectivist tendency – calling it left, and directly tying it to the current political left – which is more about the triumph of individual rights over those in power is insane.
> Oh, the Nazis replaced the Trade Unions? So, did they have panels for grievances, did they organize strikes?
They didn’t need to… they created a socialist workers utopia.
How often do you see a Union striking against *itself?*
> the current political left – which is more about the triumph of individual rights over those in power is insane.
Yes, saying that “the current political left is about the triumph of individual rights” *IS* insane. the current political Left is not about individuals, but the collective. If you believe otherwise, then that indicates that you are disconnected from reality in important ways, at least as regards to viewing politics.
