From the Seattle Times:

Boeing disclosed a serious new setback to its 787 Dreamliner program just days before the airplane was to fly, announcing today that the first flight will be postponed for weeks because the plane needs structural reinforcement.

Engineers found a structural defect that dictates “a need to reinforce an area within the side-of-body section of the aircraft,” the company said.

Adding to the delay’s impact is uncertainty: Boeing said it will be “several weeks” before it will even come up with a new schedule.

  1. I wonder if Boeing finally is going to have a real flop on their hands?
They’ve been very good at avoiding screw-ups over the years, but eventually, everyone’s luck runs out.

  2. I hope not. What with Airbus planes turnign into confettit in mid-air (and now being built in China, so expect them to be made out of Elmers glue and twine rather than epoxy and carbon fiber), the 787 tanking would be just plain Not Good for the future of flight.

  3. We’ve passed our civilization’s peak. It happened in 1966, which was the peak year of NASA funding, and the year Disney died. Or 1963, just before Kennedy was killed.

  4. The day of the big lumbering aerospace companies may be coming to an end anyways. There are lots of little groups that can and will “get it done” in much more timely fashion.
