Just to prove that the UK government hasn’t cornered the market on stupid with respect to knives, here’s some dumbassery out of the US government.

U.S. Government Trying To Take Away Your Pocket Knives!

U .S. Customs has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposal would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its overly broad new definition of a switchblade would also include all one-handed opening knives and most other pocket knives! …

The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its new broad definition of a switchblade would also include one-handed opening knives and could be easily interpreted to cover most other pocket knives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints. At this point, one-hand opening and assisted opening knives are 80% of U.S. knife sales (per AKTI industry sources). For most knife companies, they represent all or the majority of their product lines. These are the knives Americans take with them to work and to play everyday.

Oy.

  1. Of course you can kill people with those box-opening slide utility knives also, as we found out the hard way on 9/11.
And I assume they are about to go bye-bye also.
In the future we shall sever tape on boxes the new, safe, way…by digging out that reel of Primacord we keep in our pocket, and blasting the tape open. 🙂
I assume from the photos on your earlier article that a fellow-model builder like you has also had run-ins with things on a Dremal tool, although I still challenge you to outdo my wonderful screw-up of using a tiny drill bit to drill out a porthole on the Revell Titanic model’s hull, and going right through the hull, then through the end of the index finger of my left hand that I was holding the hull half with.

  2. I have 3 pieces of edged steel on me at all times, not to mention a 4-way screwdriver and #3 Visegrips. They can kiss my white ass.

  4. Must be some folks from NYC behind this one.

I was recently out to the Big Apple and decided to take along my usual Kershaw Vapor folding pocket knife. All three inche blade.

I knew the Statue of Liberty Tour had some tighter security these days but I didn’t think it had gotten this tight.

Okay, I shouldn’t have had the knife with me. My bad. But then I learned that New York city as a whole now bans such things. Any “one hand opening knife” is illegal in that city.

I could’ve gone back to my hotel room, left my knife there and returned to the Tour. Oh no, that knife had to be confiscated right there and then. Something about “gravity assisted knives” as well.

Great. The powers that be seem intent on turning us all into nothing but sheep.
