Almost certainly not.

From the Mail Online:

Plunging a knife in again and again, diver Craig Clasen grapples with a 12ft tiger shark to protect a friend.

For two hours he wrestled with the giant, spearing it seven times, even drowning the beast before eventually finishing it off with a knife.

Few things scream “Brave? Stupid? You be the judge!” louder than going mano-a-mano with a man eating shark. Exactly how a guy with just a snorkel fought with a shark for two hours was left a bit vague, however. The pictures, of which there are several at the link, seem to show that by the time they were taken the shark was either dead or pretty close to it… my understanding is that they rarely just sorta hang there vertically, and wounds tend to bleed. Still, I can’t say as I’d care to mess about with a shark like that, even if I thought it was dead. It might have cousins.

However, this is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. Behold the saga of Captain Sigurdur Petursson:

An Icelandic fishing captain, known as “the Iceman”, wrestled and killed a 300kg shark to stop it attacking his crew, according to witnesses.Captain Sigurdur Petursson was on a beach in Kuummiit, east Greenland, watching his crew processing a catch when he saw the shark swimming towards his men.

The skipper of the trawler Erik the Red, ran into the shallow water and grabbed the shark by its tail with his bare hands.

He dragged it off to dry land and killed it with his knife.

Awesome.

  1. He’s going to drown a shark? Yeah, right.
    I smell BS big time.

  2. Drowing a shark is realtively straightforward. Most species of shark will drown if they stand still… they need to keep moving forward to keep water flowing past their gills. They can’t “breath” like other fish.

So if you restrain a shark, it can drown.

  3. Fishermen cleaning a catch in thewater and a spear fishing dumb ass free diver attract some sharks because there is blood in the water and the sharks are looking for a meal. The sharks are just doing what sharks do–feed on dying fish.

Are we supposed to be impressed? They’re a bunch of dumbasses. You do stupid things in the ocean and you’re going to attract predators.
