At least, not in Sweden…
Mercury is to be banned in Sweden starting June 1st, environment minister Andreas Carlgren has announced.
The ban prohibits products containing the heavy metal from being brought to market in Sweden.
“Mercury is now dead and buried,” Carlgren said.
The actual decision is set to be taken by the government when it meets on Thursday.
In addition to a ban on products containing mercury, the prohibition also means the substance can no longer be used in manufacturing or dentistry.
Heh. None of those compact fluorescent lights for Sweden…

to use one of your phrases, FEH!!, the store IKEA, (which is of course swedish), still sells ’em here in Englandland….
Funnily enough, here in UK you can’t buy 100 watt light bulbs any more, they,ve been banned as not green enough, so you,ve got to use the Hg filled jobbies which are in the process of being banned in sweden…..

Be wary. The CFL’s are advertised as both energy efficient and long-lasting. But I’ve had at least five of ’em go out on me (when I first moved into the house, most of the fixtures needed bulbs, so, what the hell, I used CFLs). And two of them, when they went out, they went out with bangs, fire and profoundly nasty smoke. I’ve never really worried about any of my incandescent bulbs burnign my house down, but the CFLs… they could do it.
