Hmmm…

Sci-Fi Title ‘Europa’ To Orbit Toronto

Scripted by Philip Gelatt, Europa is the story of a six-person team of astronauts from various international space stations who are sent by a private sector corporation to be the first manned mission to Jupiter’s fourth moon. Eugenio Caballero (Pan’s Labryrinth, is production designer, and the plan is to begin shooting in New York this fall.

It at least has potential. However, Hollywood being what it is, chances are good it’ll have stupid space monsters, and the “private sector corporation” will be the personification of evil.

  1. If there’s life on Europa its probably is in the subsurface sea; so this might have lots of underwater action in it: I’m hopping they read my old sci.space.history postings and the Europian Sentient Sono-Squids will be in it.

  2. It has potential and an intriguing concept behind it. Usually where there is water, there is some sort of life. At least here on Earth anyway.

The first life we’ll discover will either be microbes of some sort or some type of insect.

    • I think there’s around a 50/50 chance of life in the seas of Europa, a lot better than on Mars.
The Sono-Squids were only half in jest*; with that much ice over them and at that far from the Sun, there’s not much chance that lifeforms would develop eyes in the perpetual darkness of the subsurface sea.
So, if they have any senses or means of communication, it might well be based on sound or electrical emission and detection through the water, In somewhat the same way that sharks can pick up the electrical emissions of prey animals muscles from miles away. or that electric eel’s shocking ability originally evolved as a means to emit electrical impulses and detect their reflection or absorption by things in their vicinity.
This would work particularity well in water that has a high enough mineral content to be fairly electrically conductive.

      * Don’t even get me started on the pure horror of the “Titanic Titanian Methane Muskies”; creatures far larger than a Blue Whale with six-foot venomous fangs and eyes the size of beach balls to deal with the low light levels out near Saturn:

  3. A case of Shiner says that any life we might find on Europa will be identifiably terrestrial in origin. I suspect our fecund little planet has seeded most of the solar system over the years.

I think this will be a better movie..if it ever gets made.

  5. […] trailers are coming out for the movie “Europa” (previously mentioned here more than a year ago) due for release in […]
