  1. They always reminded me of one of the Drones out of “Silent Running”. 🙂
If anyone at the time knew what that was going to lead to, it’s as historic as “Mr. Watson, come here.” and “What hath God wrought?”…and probably more so.
Personal computers have probably changed the world more than anything did since the invention of electrical power.
My friend still has a case off one of the original ones, with everyone’s names inside of it.
Lose your internet access for a day, and you’ll feel like you are blind without the WWW.
When I got my first computer in late 1997 and took my first look at the web with it, I felt like someone had just given me the keys to the entire Library Of Congress and then some. I was nuts on the subject:
“DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S OUT THERE? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA AT ALL OF ALL THE _THINGS_ THAT ARE OUT THERE?”
I was the crazed Evangelist Of The Internet, coming to my pre-computer friendly friends with a wild look in my eyes, saying that I had seen a burning bush on a mountainside, and you wouldn’t BELIEVE what it was like.
“GET ON THE WEB, OR I MAY HAVE TO KILL YOU!” was my very subtle approach.
Then they got on the Web; next thing they were saying: “DID YOU SEE HOW BRIGHT THE FLAMES WERE AROUND THAT BUSH! I IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE!
…AND THE _PORN_! THERE’S PORN ALL OVER THE PLACE!”.
Truly I had lead them to a land of milkbags and honeys, as GOD’S PROPHET JOBS had promised! 😀

  2. Blast the microchip. I wish electronics had stagnated long enough for LVs to grow in size the world over. They should have been invented on a moonbase.

Back in high school, I learned on an Apple IIe. I thought to myself:

“Nothing is ever going to come of this. This is only good for some grocery lists and games.”

Ugh…Not to mention that I did something which froze the computer, and even the resident geek in the class couldn’t figure out what I had done to it…

    • I took a computer class in high school; it involved tapes, punch cards, and core memory.

  3. Did that Mac have a voice synthesiser? It sounds more like the Amiga to me. Did Commodore use the same software? I remember the first time I saw that computer when someone, closely associated with the origins of the World Wide Web, came into our lab with his new toy. It had a small, low resolution monochrome screen and our first attempts to control a mouse had the cursor zipping everywhere.
