I’m surprised it took this long for this photo to become the Astronomy Picture of the Day:
This is a long-duration photo taken from the ISS showing the Atlantis space shuttle orbiter re-entering. Never again will such a photo be possible.

It really sucks that we had to wait 30 years for a picture like this – and there won’t be any more like it.
Its not a long duration(exposure) photo; the trail is the afterglow of the plasma.

I was trying to figure out what the Atlantis photo reminded me of; it looks like the scene in the movie “2010” where they show the Leonov as seen from a distance as it aerobrakes into Jupiter’s orbit by entering its outer atmosphere.
