Forward mounted retro is interesting, as is the fact that Krafft Ehricke was working on his Atlas “wetlab” design Atlas space station and lifting body RV’s way back then.
I take it the helium bottles were for pressurizing the H2O2 to drive it to the thrusters? It’s interesting to see the Bo Randall “Astro” knife on the inside of the hatch:
