Strafing surfaced subs (or their snorkels) while they are recharging their batteries?
I assume the machine gun sticks out a side opening and you circle your target.
Yeah, the only reason it might be there is to have fun.
Suppose you are out looking for Soviet Whiskey class subs, and none of the damn things can be found…but look…there’s a sperm whale down there that’s throwing you the flipper…well, by God, he has to be taught the sort of good manners that your mother taught you, so it’s time for you to give his blubbery ass a good whupin’ for his own benefit.
“Hey Moby Dick, meet Ma Duece!”
Then you notice the Japanese whaling ship near him.
Looks like it’s heading for Pearl Harbor…not this time!
“Hey Moto! Here come Mama!”

I bet that .50 was there to alter attitudes after the plane landed near someone in the water.
Was the .50 caliber used to aim other weapons? I know there’s some coaxial weapons like that from the era.
