Heroes and myths are pretty much constants in human societies. These stories we tell ourselves to tell us who we are vary wildly across time and space, of course, but every culture has them. Sometimes the myths are pure invention, based on magic and the supernatural; sometimes they are idealized versions of history. But something all these myths do is impart messages about not just history, but what the people in that culture are supposed to be like. The United States is no different in this regard, though as a young nation our heroes and myths are generally more “reality based.” Our history does not stretch back into the dim, unknowable mists of antiquity, but instead just a few centuries. So we have the Founding Fathers and Davy Crockett and General Patton and Chris Columbus and the Wright Brothers and Honest Abe and such forth. We have sort of secondary mythical heroes in the form of Batman and Superman and Han Solo and the Lone Ranger and cowboys and the like as well.

Except…

In the last few generations there has been a concerted effort to not only remake our heroes and myths, but to destroy them. Columbus is now a genocidal villain. The Founding Fathers are now a bunch of slaveowning hypocrites. The video below shows what has become of our more mythical heroes in recent years:

The long-standing general hero stereotype of the strong man who fights for right against overwhelming odds and ends up being recognized as, indeed, a Hero seems to be changing into a stereotype of a guy who is basically a sucker who knowingly or unknowingly serves the interests of The Man and ends up ground under the wheel… of the hero is just a disillusioned cynic who lives a life of misery. The goal – if one assumes there is any such thing here as an intended goal – certainly seems to be to *destroy* the heroes and myths that helped make America into a powerful and confident nation and replace them with either nothing at all, or with heroes who are weak, emasculated proponents of “progressive” ideologies.

I am a fan of Cold Hard Facts. And facts often stand in contradiction to deeply held beliefs, even beliefs about historical heroes. Yes, many of the Founders were slave owners. Yes, many of them were hypocritical in holding onto slaves while going on about Freedom and Liberty. But it seems to me that focusing on those issues, important as they were, trashes the social utility of the myth. And the thing is… societies seem to *need* their myths to hold together. What happens to a society when their myths are simply erased? I dunno, but I suspect it would result in something like what we’re seeing: the nation is fragmenting into identity groups… feminists vs. men, blacks vs. whites. Muslims vs. “Islamophobes,” left vs.right, etc., etc. If we cannot agreed on who we are and who we were and who we want to be, then we are no longer in this together.

Trump Directs Pentagon to Create ‘Space Force’ Branch of Military

“The essence of the American character is to explore new horizons and to tame new frontiers.”

Well… yes.

… his directive will task the Defense Department to begin the process of establishing the ‘Space Force’ as the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces. He said the new branch’s creation will be overseen by Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force, separate but equal.”

Unfortunate phraseology, but damned straight.

As expected, this will be met with derision and snark. But that’s ok… so long as it actually happens. Because a USSF is about 50 years overdue.

To see some snark:

C’mon man, ‘Space Marines’ was RIGHT THERE

“It’s amazing that we have a President that bangs porn stars and wants a space force and I still hate him. ”

The 80’s aesthetic actually really works here.

Cut Trump supporters off: The horror of migrant kids taken from parents demands personal action

The author of the piece is cheesed off that children are being separated from their criminal parents. Which… haven’t we pretty much *always* done that, or are Americas prisons filled not just with criminals but their children as well?

Anyway, this intellectual giant suggests that the way to deal with the horror of not putting children into prison when their parents break the law is for “progressives” to shun their friends and family who support Trump. This is not a new idea, of course, but it does keep popping up.

Well, carry the thought experiment forward. Conservatives will have to get their food and products at places like Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby, while progressives will get theirs at Starbucks. Hmm. Which of these seem to be constantly in the news with accusations of racist acts against customers? But at least the progressives will get to keep all their entertainers, who will of course never harass or grope their womenfolk.

Ha.

Jurassic World 2 Made Almost As Much Money In China Opening Day As The Last Jedi In Its Entire Run

“Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom” made about $35 million in China on opening day, while “Last Jedi” made only $42 million. China is of course an increasingly important market for major motion pictures, but the Star Wars franchise is having serious trouble there: “Solo” only made $10 million.

There are couple ways Hollywood could deal with this:

  1. Do better at making movies that appeal to the Chinese market. The “Star Wars” franchise didn’t play in China back in the day, so the sequel trilogy doubtless doesn’t make much sense to the Chinese market. They have no built-in nostaligia for it. On the other hand, even if the Chinese hadn’t seen the original “Jurassic Park,” the recent reboots feature dinosaurs. And those don’t need translation.
  2. Forget about the Chinese market, and make movies more likely to appeal to the western/US market. This would imply “smarter” movies, since you need not dumb down the chitchat and plot so that it will be palatable when translated into a foreign language and displayed in a foreign culture.

Me, I’d prefer #2. It might mean lower potential worldwide box office… but the fraction of the box office take that the studio actual gets is fairly small, so it would seem to be a minimal loss. And it need not cost much of *anything* to improve the plot and dialog.

There is another interesting note. A few weeks ago, this bit of journalistic cancer was posted:

As ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Flops, Are Movies About White Men Box Office Poison?

Where the author attempts to make the case that the world is becoming a  progressive feminist paradise where straight white men are finally being shown the door out of the culture they created, to be replaced with… well, anyone but straight white males. “Solo,” “King Arthur” and “The Mummy” are presented as examples of White Male Leads Ruining Movies.

And then along comes “Jurassic World 2,” with Extremely White Guy Chris Pratt in the lead and to all accounts it’s making buckets of money in China and elsewhere and is expected to rake in the monies once it hits the US market (if anyone can explain why foreign markets got it *two* *weeks* before the US, speak up). At the same time there’s “Hotel Artemis,” which many people compared to the “John Wick” movies (starring Very White Keanu Reeves). “Wick” made $89 million on a $30million budget… not great, but not bad for a relatively small movie. “Wick 2” bumped the budget to $40 million… and raked in $171 million. In contrast, “Hotel Artemis,” which features a woman and a black guy as the main leads, cost a paltry $15 million to make… and has so far brought in an even more paltry $4.8 million… of which a  whopping $43 *thousand* is the foreign take. And then there’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” which has a whole bunch of leads, but most of them are White Guys, and it has so far made over $2 BILLION worldwide. And there’s “Deadpool 2” which had a Messed Up White Guy Who Makes Fun Of Diversity Goals as the main character, and it has so far brought in a bit over two thirds of a billion dollars.

So the claim that “white guy = box office poison” seems ill founded at best. What with the cultural Marxism, political correctness, SJWs and all the rest of that rubbish, perhaps there will come a day when having a white guy lead is truly the kiss of death for a quality motion picture.

Ron Howard sparks political debate by asking Twitter ‘When was America at its greatest?’

It’s meant as a “gotcha” for those wearing “Make America Great Again” hats. But it’s still a fair question… if you want to “make America great *again*” that means there was a time when America was great in a way that it is no longer.

This is the sort of question I’ve been asking for a decade or more on another subject… global warming. If the world is going to hell climate-wise and getting progressively worse, that means that if you go back in time there was a point when the climate was optimal. When was that?

But to the MAGA point: When do YOU, dear blog reader, think that America was at it’s greatest if you do indeed think that America needs to be made great *again*? Personally, I’ve never gone for the MAGA thing, because there does not seem to me to have been a singular point in time when I can say “yup, that was clearly the best and it’s all been downhill from there.” In some ways, the first half of the 60’s was a golden age: the US was going gangbusters in aerospace, the future looked awesome, nuclear reactors were sprouting up everywhere. But then there was Viet Nam and Great Society and race riots and hippies and every other damn thing. The 80’s under Reagan were a golden age of sorts: a return to pride, and again things looked up in aerospace, with SDI and NASP and all the rest… that didn’t actually come to fruition. And there was the late 40’s an the fifties… the US stood atop the world like a colossus, our power and enthusiasm were unmatched. But then there was Korea and the Red Scare and things kinda sucked if you were black.

As I mentioned a week-ish ago, Denver has gotten pretty bad in recent years. The population has ballooned, traffic is terrible, and it seems like they’ve covered all the hillsides with housing developments to the point that the natural beauty of the place has been replaced with “look, we’re just like California!” It’s so bad that even the port-a-potties are trying to get out of town, shooting off into the sky to find a better tomorrow.

Note that when they take off, they dump ballast in the form of a fine and doubtless fragrant mist.

Antisnark: Note the parents who land on their children and protect them from harm. THAT is how it’s done, folks. Kudos.
